When I was mystery shopping them, I found that the jobs were all on the computer terminals that are spread throughout the room. And there were notices on the screens that made me think you could access those listings from your home computer too.

It wasn't the current system, but I just googled and found this: https://www.gov.uk/jobsearch

Yes but if you are unemployed do you have access to a computer? While you might be able to use a computer in a public library that service is completely dependant on you being able to get access. My village library is only open three days a week, and you have to book computer access in advance. The problem is that policy makers have no comprehension of how many people live, assuming everyone has access to a computer. Also many jobs will be advertised in local newspapers, which you might be able to access in the library as well. Though with many councils cutting back these may not necessarily be available to everyone.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

I just bought a very basic level computer and subsequently replaced it with another similar and that was £400 gone (and money paid to a "little man who can" to set it up for me).

Am guessing that there wouldn't be a lot of odds pricewise to have "unlimited broadband" option added to a landline monthly rental?? but, if someone lived in rented accommodation, there might not necessarily be a landline (and so they would be on a mobile phone, used for essential personal calls only I guess).

I can well believe a member of the public might have to "elbow their way past" a member of staff to get into a jobcentre (oh..do try it and let us know what happens!!), having had to "elbow my way past" a jobsworth staff member of a government dept and I was an employee of theirs!!!!
  • As I understand it, the only way to be seen at a Jobcentre, for any kind of help, is by telephoning a central call centre for an appointment. There is no way of just walking in off the street.

If every single person who was sanctioned or treated unfairly then contacted their MP in letter and/or in person every time it happened then MPs would get fedup of it and moan in parliament. They get well paid - make them work for it, make them do their job.

    :T Too right.

And we're looking at an election on May 7th, make the beggars sweat for your vote (even if you have no intention of voting for them). My MP has a very low majority and is probably looking for their next job as we speak.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I'm quite used to dealing with jumped up, "full of their own importance" people.

Last March, I was in my local Council Tax Office (due to my pay day, I need to make the first CT payment in March instead of April), asking about the monthly installments.

I was in conversation with the lady behind the counter, when a man walks up and starts a conversation with her.

So I say "Excuse me, but this lady is dealing with me.".

The lady behind the desk says "He's my supervisor." (as though this somehow justifies his bad manners)

I replied "I don't care who his is. You are dealing with me. He can wait his turn".

He coughed up an apology and skulked away a few feet.
  • It's not snowing atm (although we still have a couple of inches of snow from earlier this week) but, looking at the sky, I wouldn't be at all surprised, if we get some more soon.

The Euro exchange rate has improved again.

Yesterday, Ramsdens was selling Euros at 1.2755.

Today, they's selling them at 1.2886.

Compared to what I got for my £400, in November, I'd be better off today by over 20 Euros.

I wonder how much further it will go?
  • Good for you Bob. I so hate bad manners. I was doing a little bit of sewing at the kitchen table on Tuesday night listening to radio four I believe it was. They were discussing the way some people have been treated in job centres (which some of you lovely people have mentioned on here) My dh was watching the football match on tv. in another room, and I was so incensed by what I was hearing that I was in and out to tell him the next awful bit. He was so angry to hear of it too. In the end I had to turn it off as It was awful to hear:( I have had my dealings with these people many many years ago when I was bringing up my children on my own and I only ever met one lovely woman who was of help to me. I still remember her kindness...
