Also as I was wandering around @m@zon I came across Sawyer water filters and wondered if anyone here had one. If so how do you find it?

    Yes, I've got one.

    They're excellent.

One thing I would recommend, is to carry an empty plastic pop type bottle, as the pouches are far from indestructible.

Last Saturday I bought some smoked gammon ham from our local street market deli stall. (This lady is there every week, so I might go and see her on Saturday.)

It seemed cool enough, as it was a cool day, and I took it home and had a bit in a sandwich with no ill effects. The use by date was around Xmas, so I had another bit yesterday lunchtime.

Around midnight I started getting a belly ache, and found it hard to sleep. Over the course of the night I had to 'number 2' around 5 times, but fortunately wasn't sick.

I spent the day in bed sipping water, and got up for a cup of tea around 5pm as my belly is okay now.

I think what I didn't consider is how many days that gammon had been out on the stall previously getting warm.

Usually the use by date on stuff like ham is qualified by a 'use within X days of opening' statement. You might want to check the packaging, although deli products often aren't labelled the same way as you're buying 'loose' items that are sold by weight.

I'd certainly be happy to keep cured gammon or cooked ham unopened for quite a long time, but once opened I'd use it up quite quickly. Or freeze it.

jk0 Hope that you recover and please speak to Environmental Health. They can check the stall over and if it is OK, it is OK. If not, you stop a lot of people getting sick.

Has anyone else picked up on this http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/nov/29/young-londoners-flee-capital-region-house-prices ?

Sort of seeing the fan and getting out the way?

    I tend to agree RAS.

But then....I would..having "fled" in turn recently out of my home area because I just couldn't afford a "this stage of my life" house there (ie detached/garden/etc), but basically had to sell the (starter) house I had and I was/am angry and upset at the hordes of people pouring into where I was and expanding the place to be a very different one to where I moved to many years back. Standing "joke" there amongst many being "They move here because they think its nice/like it too and then make it worse for us in the process:(".

I think knock-on effects are happening across Britain and not just a "flight" from London and it's very sad/upsetting to see this going on.

With that a lot of existing support networks (being it friendship ones/career ones/family ones) are being broken up and society, as a whole, will be the poorer for it.

How can you run a market deli stall without a method of keeping food chilled?

Thanks all for your good wishes.

No belly ache today, but still feel rather fragile.

While I've been ill, I've been eying up the damp shed where my Bug out bag lives. I think I have an idea for a way to keep it dry. Among my garage 'hoard' I have a tatty electric towel rail that I replaced at my previous house, together with some underground cable.

I plan to install a supply to the shed, and have ordered one of these for the shed:

I plan to install the towel rail in a large cupboard in the shed and just have it come on during the cheap overnight hours. I think I should get away with it only being on the 7 hours, and should only cost about 6p per day to run.
  • Hi Guys,

Hope all is well - I do occasionally read but haven't posted in an age! The news just gets grimmer doesn't it, and no sign here of those green shoots I keep hearing about.

Just popped into say we had our first snow today - kept changing between snow, hail and sleet and hasn't lay, but there's quite a bit over the Rest. We have more forecast for Sunday, and more combined with gales over the forthcoming week.

Keep prepping, and have a fantastic holidays,
    WCS

:) Nice to see you, WCS, hope you and yours have an enjoyable holiday season.

The UK's 9 Containment Level 4 bio-hazard labs have appalling safety records. They are all in south-east England (y'know, the most densely-populated bit, with the international airports). They're handling ebola, marburg, lassa. There are 600 CL3 labs dotted around the country. They're handling deadly delights such as anthrax, TB, the plague and rabies.

You'll be comforted to know that in the past 5 years there have been 100 safety breaches at CL3 and CL4 labs inc live anthrax being sent out, and viable bovine TB (contagious to humans). One of the guilty labs is the Pirbright Institute in Surrey which has had 8 enforcement letters served on it since April 2010. This is the place which allowed foot-and-mouth to escape via its drains, causing the 2007 outbreak.

I'm feeling all warm, fuzzy and safe, now.

    :D I knew you would.

Makes you wonder if labs with such repeated failures should be allowed to operate. I feel the urge to get out my road atlas and start marking their whereabouts with big yellow dots for bio-hazard.

If you put RL stuff like this into a movie or a work of fiction, you'd be mocked as a scare-mongering fantasist. I'm delighted to know that Porton Down near Salisbury has ebola-infected marmosets and leaky biohazard suits. I know people in that city, dammit.

Perhaps when circulating socially in our separate spheres, we ought to find out exactly what acquaintances do for a living, particularly if they are some species of scientist or lab technician........
