I have just spent a lot of money on some good safe candle lanterns, My wind up, rechargeable lanterns are proving to be useless, they are not holding their charge and only in their 4th year. What a wast of money they were, they were full of promise but don`t deliver any more. I have dozens of candles but baulk at lots of naked flames so these lanterns will hold 2 or 3 at a time and at least we will have guaranteed light with some heat. They are stainless steel and I suppose are designerbut hey ho, not spent anything on a holiday this year so can justify, that plus lowering risk of fire accident.
No news yet re winter but this weather now is very typical of mini ice age and this could well mean a massive sudden plunge in temperature, which will mean power going out. We have a few tools using quite large lion makita batteries and I bought myself a makita radio, which I can link all my audio stuff too, loads of books and lots of music. Brilliant sound from this industrial radio, I am thinking ahead all the time now, to winter, just need to keep the batteries charged

I think she was funnier than her male predecessor. Some of my favourite moments were when Rimmer was showing off quoting some regulation or other, and Kryten would say "You say regulation number 2468 point 3? People with big noses are not allowed to keep rabbits in confined spaces?" (Or something equally ludicrous along those lines).
The suicide squid one was quite amusing I recall. One life - your life - live it!0 -
As regards power cuts, I think it is now a matter of when, not if.0

kittie I think the main forecast warns of lower temperatures to come soon. We have good insulation, working central heating plus means of keeping warm in case of power cuts, and a fairly well stocked food cupboard. I have often found things are never as bad as forecast in my neck of the woods, but still take nothing for granted. One life - your life - live it!0

We had gazillions of trick or treaters last night and the thing they were most excited about was the homemade chocolate cakes with the jelly monsters on top!!! Forget the cadburys chocolate fingers or buttons and the kit kat and penguin biscuits they dashed back down the drive saying Mum there's CAKE!!! We had so many I lost count and today I have roasted up the pumpkin to freeze as puree for soups later on.
DD1 had an issue late last afternoon though, she was in the shower and suddenly it looked like she was washing in water with hair dye in, brown and cloudy. She checked all the taps in the house and both the hot and cold taps were running the same brown gungy stuff. She phoned the water supplier who said it was probably someone close by having turned off the water supply to their own house and then turning it back on again sometimes disturbed sediment in the pipes. Recommendation to run all the taps for an hour until it cleared. That's fine for DD as a single occupier household and not on a water meter but for those of us on the water meter that would be a very costly action. The water DID clear after an hour and the contamination has disappeared but she went out and got 20 litres of extra bottled water today, just in case.
We have still got our old border terrier, I often hear him pitterpat down the stairs and hear the jingle of his collar, he comes and stands by my armchair or by me in the kitchen or goes to the back door and I always open it to let him out and then he jingles back in again. I know it's not Docky dog as he can't wear a collar due to an old neck injury and doesn't have anything to jingle I love it and it makes me very happy to think he's still here because he loves us. I hope he'll be there in the future when we go to join him and that will be lovely to all be together again.0 -

On the other hand, the idea of all time happening at once
I think this may be it. A man called John Wills Dunne wrote a book in the 1930s called "A Experiment In Time" (or may be "An Experiment With Time", can't quite remember) about his theories, I read it years ago and was fascinated but sadly can't remember a thing he saidI have soooo much trouble retrieving info from my memory banks these days.
The one that astonishes me most out of these procedures is the number of people who have had one of those old-fashioned "things down throat" exploratory procedures even since the modern procedure got invented a few years ago (ie swallowing a very miniature camera that takes photos as it heads "down and out" and transmitting those photos to an outside machine). I'd have the modern one if I had to, but not that old-fashioned "thing down throat" one...no chance (something-oscopy I think...cant remember the name).
Ah, but the swallowing a miniature camera is probably far more expensive! The camera down the throat is a gastroscopy. I've had it done twice, It's fine as long as you insist they give you sedation, and the pics are fascinating to watch.0 -
