That doesn't really jibe with the pharmacist, who flat out refused to sell me soluble aspirin.0 -

Also a soluble aspirin held onto a painful tooth and left there to dissolve is good for toothache.
First Aiders should not be routinely issuing medicines.
I'd include them in the household medical supplies, and obviously in BOBs, but not in 1st Aid kits for cars and the like.0 -

24g (48 -500mg tablets) is a heck of a lot.
2g (4 - 500mg tablets) is an overdose, while 10g (20 - 500g tablets) is the toxicity level, for an 8 stone person.0 -

The pharmacy attached to the medical centre refuses to sell them to me, yet I can buy a pack of 16 tablets, for a mere 40p, off the shelf, at Boots
I went to the chemist to buy some Eurax cream, asked if they had a larger tube because it was for a dog with a rash and they said they couldn't sell it to me because they weren't licensed to sell products for animal use they suggested I went to the chemist across the road and not to tell them it was for animal use, sometimes I feel the world has gone mad.0 -
Did the pharmacist give you a valid reason? If not, then it sounds like the staff at that shop could do with some customer service training!
Cold relief tablets typically contain 300mg of paracetamol, so a dose would contain 600mg. Take these four times a day and that is 2400 mg. If you take the maximum dose of paracetamol on top of these, which is 4 grams in 24 hours, then that makes a total of 6.4 grams paracetamol you've taken, more than 50% over the recommended safe dose. Do this for two or three days in a row and you could be in trouble. And if you have any degree of liver or kidney failure, that could be enough to tip you over the edge. So, yes, I agree nobody accidentally takes 48 tablets all in one go, but it is possible to take more than the recommended dose over a period of time without realising what you've doing. In the same way that someone only has one of two beers, not realising that many beers have more than one unit of alcohol per half pint. One life - your life - live it!0 -
Evening all.
For anyone interested, Goo Ootdoors are having some nice prices on clothing atm, I shall be taking advantage of a couple of items that I was intending to buy anyway, buying their pro-climate trews for £9 is a sweet price; paid about £12 last time. They're a practical everyday trouser, very boring-looking (i.e. ideal grey man/ grey woman) but good for the price and they dry quickly.
I have also been in Tosspots and they have their bakery supplies on 3 for 2 until the 12th November, which means I have added to the dried yeast supplies. Tell ya, if there was a problem with getting the bread delivered, those of us with bread flour and dried yeast would be happy bunnies.
It's very good to be aware that there can be paracetamol in OTC cold and flu remedies; I know a woman who made herself ill like that. I'm not particularly hard-arrised but I can't be doing with pill-popping and syrup-slurping for a cold. I take medicinal ice-cream for a very sore throat and put myself to bed early with a hot bottle for anything else cold-related. Most things pass with warmth, rest and enough fluids.
And for everything else there's.............CHOCOLATE.:EasterBunMany moons ago, I was in a GP surgery in Scotlandshire, where I lived at the time. He recommended that a seasonal ailment be treated by retiring to bed with a bottle of whiskey. Quick as a flash, I asked if I could have it on prescription, as there was no way my churchmouse budget would stretch to it otherwise.
Alas and alack, the NHS doesn't provide strong likker...........darnit.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Was it a pharmacist though? There is often only one pharmacist on duty and other staff are basically shop assistants. I guess they are given quite strict rules on what they can and cannot do / sell.0 -

The recommended maximum daily dose, for a healthy adult, is 3 grams, so the 6.4 grams is more than 100% over the recommended daily dose.0 -
Another example of how people can get confused with drugs - you say recommended maximum dose is 3 grams daily, but the packaging says take every 4 hours but no more than 4 doses in 24 hours! And when you read all the small print on the leaflets that come with the drugs, the list of all the possible side effects is enough to give you nightmares. I know that even if a chance of a particular adverse effect is only one in a million it still has to be mentioned, because you might be that unlucky one in a million who might sue the backside off the pharmaceuticals for not mentioning it!

Greyqueen I find a hot toddy good for colds. Lemon, honey, ginger, bit of cayenne, hot water and a shlurp of something alcofrolic on the top.One life - your life - live it!0
