Some overdoses are accidental, e.g. someone taking both paracetamol and cold relief tablets over a few days, not realising that the cold tablets have paracetamol in them. You have to be so careful when self-medicating.

    A valid point.

It is clear that people need to be protected from making mistakes with dosages in all innocence.

On the other hand = it's up to people to decide things for themselves.

So...where does the line get drawn?

Personally, I would draw it at "Tell people exactly whats what and then they decide for themselves what they will or wont do". You simply can't cater to the "lowest common denominator" all the time (ie people who won't/can't understand whats what) because that penalises the vast majority of the population.

And that I believe is the ethos of modern day patient care. Give people the relevant information, all the pros and cons, the choice of alternatives, and then let them make an informed choice of action.

  • I don't think we should rely on buying supplies in shops if we have frequent blackouts or brownouts (what's the difference anyway?).
Quite apart from inability to operate tills, keep frozen goods frozen or light the store, deliveries are now massively dependent on computerised logistics to determine collections and deliveries from ports and warehouses. Those systems would I would like to think be protected from power cuts but that might be too sensible.
I saw this and thought of you lot: :D

It really is ridiculous, refusing to sell aspirin to someone. Adults should be able to make their own decisions. It isn't a good idea to give aspirin to children - it can cause kidney problems I think. A sensible thing to have in your first aid kit though BB, good for headaches and it can be used in a regular four-times-a-day regime like ibuprofen for joint pains and the like. Also a soluble aspirin held onto a painful tooth and left there to dissolve is good for toothache.
I was reading something else, can't remember where, that was saying the big retailers will have to start discounting winter clothing soon if the current mild weather continues. Might be a good chance to upgrade outdoor clothing or stock up on additional personal insulation. I'm going to be on the look-out for a decent winter jacket, the old coat I keep in the car for emergencies is ok for that purpose but people would probably cross the road to avoid me if they saw it on the street :o
  • Or, more to the point, just buy one or two of those portable temporary barbecues and decide to barbecue a steak/fish or whatever or two indoors, ie on the basis of the number of accidental deaths from barbecues not having been properly extinguished?

Hence, why I just don't get this restrict paracemetol type idea going round.

    If people want to...they will...and that's that.

Hence thinking "So what is the real reason for being awkward about letting people buy however many paracetamol they think they will then?" and it genuinely puzzles me..
I think a lot of people who take overdoses as a spur-of-the-moment kind of thing, it's a delaying tactic to make sure you mean it.

I also read somewhere that soluble aspirin dissolved in water and used to water your tomatoes stops them getting blight and makes healthy plants with good crops of fruit. Pointless me trying it though, I'm the kiss of death to plants.

    Absolutely:T

I do know, from very personal experience, just how some people will positively "zip" through information and understand it in 5 seconds flat, others will have to have things explained very simply and clearly and others again may possibly never get it....but you do have to work on what Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms Average in the Street will understand and cannot cater for what Mr/mrs etc Cerebrally Challenged will struggle with...because the vast majority of the population will suffer if things are dumbed down to that level and not be able to get what we have made a very conscious/informed/logical choice about.

A valid point...but underestimating the vast majority of people I feel. Most of us think things through and don't make Major Decisions on the spur of the moment I would have thought. Very conscious that, as we speak, someone somewhere will probably have made a very different Major Decision about their life/other peoples life on the spur of the moment and it might "come to pass"...but we honestly cant cater for the minority that act that way at the expense of those of us who make conscious/thought-out decisions.

Restricting you to buying 24g weight of paracetamol tablets, won't prevent accidental overdoses.

No adult takes 48 tablets by accident.
