I have a mix of Tilley Lamps, non pressurised parafin hurricane lamps, a few candle lamps designed on similar looking lines to the proceeding and a couple of led lanterns (me, a hoarder, quite possibly) I don't generally go for "something quite big and thick" I like stable bases and carrying wire handles that I can use as hangers. I used to have several battery laterns that used the large cuboid batteries but found the batteries had a fairly short shelf life in the latterns.

Yeh right...and meanwhile back on Planet Earth...and various stuff seems to indicate Ebola has been around for 20 years or so, and I'm wondering which particular conspiracy theory to subscribe to on that. Should I subscribe to the one that says "Its been genetically modified and that happened over in Africa, courtesy of USA government wanting to do it offshore - and then it escaped" or the one that says it surfaced first (in a milder version) back 20 odd years ago when the Earth's population was way over limit, but much less than now, as Earth (ie in shape of Gaia's) way to deal with carrying too many people and has got a whole lot worse because there is a whole lot more people and Gaia is getting more desperate to shed the excess load?
Hanatavirus were identified in South Korea in the 70s, Lassa Fever was identified as a virus in Nigeria in 1969, but the symptoms are described in the 1930s. Yellow Jack was the first disease Walter Reed shown to be transmissible by filtered human serum and transmitted by mosquitoes by Walter Reed in around 1900.
The above are all causes of hemorhhagic fevers, although Filoviridae (Ebola and Marburg) were first classified in 1982 (and the classification revised almost every year since) there is no major reasons to suggest any major conspiracy behind them.
Much of the conspiracy theory stuff I've seen is simply recycled from the HIV theories (now proven to have a 1920 Kinshasa as its major expansion point).COOLTRIKERCHICK wrote: »does anyone know a natural remedy for cystitis ? and what cause it? I have only had it once or twice in the pass!, and have got it again, so just nipped into supermarket to get something for it, but I was thinking.. do I buy a pack or two to put with my preps? and it will prob go out of date before I have it again lol, or if SHTF is there a natural way of curing it? I know it is an imbalance of good/bad bacteria??
sorry if it sounds trivial, but things like this, and other minor niggles could crop up in any situation lol..
Paracetamol and Ibrufen are often recommended, along with drinking plenty of water. I've seen references to urine alkanising agents being used (Sodium Bicarbonate for example) though one friend who suffers from it regularly swears by cranberry juice - which is likely to have the opposite effect.
I'd hardly describe cystitus as trivial especially in a SHTF scenario.0 -
Potassium citrate apparently relieves symptoms of cystitis (often cranberry flavoured). I used to keep cranberries in the freezer and juice them.
As nuatha mentions, the important thing is to drink lots of water to flush infection out. Avoid sugary drinks, and take some pain relief.0 -
CTC
There are two approaches as nuatha alludes to; make the urine more alkaline which makes it more comfortable or make the urine more acid which makes it less friendly to the infection.
Avoid using bicarb; my mother did and when she went to the chemists later they could identify the side effects of the sodium intake. Chemist sell potassium citrate to relieve symptoms of cystitis.
I have had it and one of the issues was that "cystitis" is the symptom of a urinary tract infection that may be caused by different bacteria. So if it persists you need antibiotics, preferably targetted, so it is time to see the docs.
One way to avoid it is to keep the urine acid and drinking cranberry and other acid juices helps.
And be prepared that if you take antibiotics, thrush can flre up.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
UTIs in children can damage kidneys, especially if they have them repeatedly. The doctor might not prescribe anything but you should always take them.
It's very hard to decide sometimes what constitutes medical advice and what is just how to look after yourself. It is useful to know that cranberry juice and barley water are soothing, don't see any harm in that. Pot Cit worked for me when I had cystitis but I would always check with the pharmacy when you should see the GP if it doesn't clear upIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
I'm sure that I read recently that cranberry juice didn't actually help with cystitis....sorry,but I can't remember where though.0

All good advice, plenty of fluids and check with pharmacist.
I've just read that an American doctor who has been treating people with ebola has now come down with it a few days after returning to the States. Surely someone in that situation would be quarantined themselves before returning to their usual lives?
Anyway GO ME! Been to see the physiotherapist and she has taken my zimmer off me and given me crutches:D. Still wheel chair for any distance but I can start to fully weight bear now. I am going to try and make the stairs tonight and sleep in our bed at last. I had no idea how vulnerable and out of control being in this situation would make me feel. But onwards and upwards now.
I start a Futurelearn course at the beginning of November. It's just a short one to get me started again - I've chosen Trauma and War- which will fit in with things I've done before.
Thanks to all for pointing me in the right direction. Not dim.....just living in soft focus

sorry if I picked the wrong word, trivial but what I meant to say in the big grand scale of things if there are floads, snowed in, war, a zombie attack its something that you wouldnt think important or even think about prepping for..
the cranberry flavoured powders I got from Ar$da are a £1 for 6 sachets which is a 2 day course, so might get a pack for my prep
I read earlier about bicarb of soda, but it did recommend that people who suffer from heart problems not to use it..Work to live= not live to work0 -
Don't know if this will interest anyone but, Asda are selling George Jeans, at 2 pairs for £10.0

Just received my latest energy bills, and I'm amazed.
Compared to the same period last year, electricity usage is down 40%, and gas usage is down 49%. :cool:0
