I thought ZTD was very polite and just explained their perspective.

"same here. I found his/her posts very interesting and not at all frivolous or flippant. A bit like looking outside the box. I am sorry that he has been `sent away like a troll` and understand him being upset/offended[/QUOTE]

    ditto.

I rarely post on this thread but often wander by to read up, it's always interesting to see another perspective; surely there's room for someone who presents a modified version of a nightmare scenario. I was disappointed that no-one countered - politely - any of ZTDs points.

:) I could have countered several of his points, raised in response to my post, but by the time I rejoined the thread, the 't' word had been bandied about and I thought better of it. Didn't want to add fuel to that fire.

Not countering a post shouldn't be presumed to be agreement or lacking an adequate response; sometimes it's being done to keep the peace.

Slept in this morning so have only a 45 min turnaround between scrambling from bed and heading out the door, so won't be around much today.

Been reading a book about the terrible battles of the Hundred Years War. At the battle of Crecy, HALF A MILLION ARROWS were shot in only a few hours. And the English warbow, with a pull in excess of 100lb, could send an arrow 350 yards and have it pierce plate armour when it landed. Hell on earth.

There is room for all experiences, ideas, thoughts, help, information, skills, perspectives, advice and anything else that helps all of us to make whatever preparations we individually feel will be useful in difficult conditions. We don't all see things from the same place and that's the strength of this thread. Just because I don't agree with something posted doesn't mean it's wrong to post it and I wouldn't like to say the poster was wrong but neither would I enjoy being shot down in flames for a post I'd taken time to write. It does happen however that occasionally we get someone posting controversy and being downright rude about it and I think those people are better being ignored and not encouraged by getting responses posted, which presumably is the sole purpose of their rudeness in the first place. We're all adults and we're all entitled to our own opinion, I just don't like it when I'm told I'm NOT entitled to mine. Life as normal my friends, onwards and upwards there are bigger things happening in the world than one posters differences to worry us aren't there?

Just to put things in perspective - Nigeria and Senegal are on the verge of being declared Ebola free if they have no new cases this week. If they can get a grip on it there is NO reason to think that first world countries will be overwhelmed.

The fact that healthcare workers are catching it is an indictment of their employers' procedures and training not that the disease is unstoppable - remember, the healthcare workers who looked after the patient who was repatriated to the UK did not get it, nor the ones who looked after the US missionary doctor, presumably because they had planned in advance how they were going to handle those cases and they sent them to facilities which were prepared and functioning as they should.
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Danih, I don;t think anti-bac gel is effective against ebola, because it isn't bacterial. You need barrier protection, and a healthy immune system (the death rate is apparently much higher in poorly nourished children in West Africa).

It still does not stop people pestering their doctor for Antibiotics for viral infections.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

I've missed the whole ZTD thing, wasn't following it.
Could I say here that the ebola scares might cause as much disruption as the illness ... we might get one index case in London that would cause panic flares all over the country.
If somebody with black skin has a nosebleed on a bus, or drops dead of a heart attack then there would be chaos.
It will not hurt to have enough food in to be able to give shops and busy places a miss until things were sorted out.. ;)

I enjoy reading all the posts and try to make good use of all your collective knowledge, thank you.
But... because there are differences of opinion this thread is great.
It throws up alternative ways of thinking and coping, and that can only be a good thing can't it?
Some people do not come across well in type (I'm sure I'm one) but I thought some of ZTD's comments were quite positive.

ZTD made some intelligent comments. His/her crime was to challenge 'regular' posters.

GQ, this post is a brilliant example of something else I've had on my brain, and I'm prompted to put it on here by this whole recent thing of "who posts what". Your posts are wonderful! I love reading what you write. If you wrote a book, I'd buy it. I'd trust the information, and I'd trust the attitude. :A

Hope you get *some* time to yourself today :)

  • Took her to the vet this morning, to get some vaccinations.

    She was quite well behaved.

She even purred when the vet examined her, which is very unusual because she generally growls when someone unknown handles her.

In fact, she purred so loud, the vet couldn't hear her heart and lungs with the stethoscope.

She didn't even meow or growl, when he stuck the needle in.

However, she's now on the bed, with her back to me, and won't turn to face me when I call her.

Little does she know, but she has another jab coming in 3 weeks. :)
