:( Bad. What scares the stuffing outta me, and what I was discussing with Dad a few days ago, was the nightmare scenario of Ebola infecting pilgrims on the Hajj. Millions of pilgrims from every corner of the world, all together then all returning to their own countries......

Looking at a specialist website catering to the Hajj, I can see that pilgrims on some of their tours will be returning on 8th October. I really really hope my idea, which is my own dark imagining not something picked up elsewhere, never comes to pass. I don't believe for a moment that the UK has the necessary medical facilities to handle more than a few dozen cases at a time.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the UK has the facilities to handle only TWO cases....i really hope I've got it wrong. Does anyone else remember seeing that?

Must admit, GQ, that I had the same thought regarding the Hajj

The Saudi authorities banned pilgrims from several west african countries (I think not just the three with major ebola problems) some months ago.

I would be more concerned about MERS, which they do not seem to have under control.

I am not sure why they are classing this as the first case of Ebola when they brought back victims of it to the states a month or so ago. I also think the mers virus is a problem, and also the virus that is striking young folk and babies in America across all the states. There are many serious cases and it is leaving some victims paralysed.

Sad news here, the first installment of the housing tax was due yesterday and two pensioners died after being in long queues at the bank and the post office. They would be fined if they were late paying and it is very stressful standing for up to four hours to pay. They could not pay early as their pension was delayed till the same day. It seems they died of heart attacks brought on by the stress. Such a shame ...

I think our weather is about to change again and get much fresher, we currently have hot sun, but its cool in the shade. The nights are quite cool, as are the mornings. On the forecast it said Italy is about to get more storms but the wind will freshen and we will all be down to single figures at night. It doesn't usually get that low till November but this year the weather is unstable at the best of times. At least we are staying dry for the time being.

Have just washed all the fleecies, jackets and scarves ready for the winter to set in. Luckily they are drying fast on the line today in the sunshine. I have packed away my flimsy summer clothes and the jumpers and layering clothes are in the wardrobe ready to wear. Now to polish my old faithful boots.....:T
  • Hi all
Thank you for the kind words about my boys job, I really appreciate them.
1T so sad to hear about those poor people.
I have decided not to stress too much about my future pension, I pay a fair sum into my works pension scheme but to be honest I don't think it will end up being as much as I hope or is currently projected, plus I fear the state pension might not exist by the time I retire (i'm 46 now so another 21 years and counting) probably be 30 years by the time they stop fiddling with the dates:eek:.
Worrying to see Ebola spreading to America, sadly I don't think it will be too long before cases are confirmed in the UK and Europe (hope i'm wrong though).
    Take care all

I'm glad you won't stress, WLL - preparing, not stressing, is the way forward, I'm sure. As I mentioned, hopefully mine's only 2 years away now (though not the same as when I'd have retired under the old system) and in the last year I've been making outline plane - now, they're starting to get some flesh on the bones. Thats my prepping, actually :)

  • I think a big part of prepping is mindset and how you look at the world. If you can find it in your psyche to respond to lifes ups and downs with the thought 'I can do this' and not 'Oh my God, I'm scuppered now' whatever throws itself your way you're more likely to find a solution than go under. I know some things are too big to be lighthearted about but I find that making myself not say 'I can't' and instead say 'I'll give it a go and see what I CAN do about this' usually brings about some sort of solution. Sideways thinking I think it's called and it's very useful when the chips are not exactly down but likely to topple!!!
