I think that having attended 2 big family funerals with a real good get together afterwards it has reinforced my opinion that spending time with and caring for people whilst we still can is so important. To appreciate them and to create memories has become even more important to both me and OH. Inevitably one of us will be left by the other, but when that happens we will have so many wonderful memories and home movies to help us through.0

Been there twice in less than two years.....it kind of focuses your head I think , once you get over the initial carp, that you need to make life count and have fun. Well that's what it did for me....get out and enjoy what is left of your life...ditch the rat-race!...Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
I'd love to ditch the rat race CC, but there's little things, like keeping a roof over your head, staying warm, eating etc., which tend to get in the way.0

Yeah, my Dad's been doing genalogical research on our family for about 20 years now and he still hasn't found anyone who needs to make me an heiress.
Totally unreasonable. I feel I'd be an excellent person to manage a private income. Somebody in the family seemed to have a title and lands back in the 14th century, one of Dad's fellow researchers in the extended family thinks that was our branch, but they ended up skint 5+ centuries ago. Dad's not even sure they're our direct ancestors as no one knew our southern English family had been in Co Durham back then. We've been in these here parts for 400 years fer sure, anyway.
Mind you, although I work for a living and it's pretty fraught when I'm at work, the closest I get to the rat race is booking pest control treatments for the residents of my city.
Rats, they can race if they like, but they just can't hide............Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I haven't managed it yet......it is a work in progress kiddo...my main aim in life now is to retire as early as possible and have a blast. If we are organised and frugal it is possible really. I don't know how old you are.....but my advise is get prepared (which you are)...and get saving every tenna you can....then life can be peachy, even if just the simple things in life. It's the freedom that matters.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
The very very best thing about being retired is actually having the time to do what you WANT to do, and having no set deadline to do the things you don't!!! To get up in the morning with the thought that you can structure your day just how you want to and the ability to do things spur of the moment or put off things that aren't crucial is worth more than any wage packet and if the money is less than you're used to having well, the time you gain gives you the wherewithall to feed yourself by growing things and making things, use the cheaper cuts of meat as you have the time to do the slow cooking, you can travel off peak and save cash, you can go to the cinema in the day much cheaper than in the evening, so many more things are cheaper in daytime and sometimes the thought that you can actually do NOTHING AT ALL is incredibly liberating!!!0

It's long since become too dim to be useful but, over 9 days into the test, it's still lit. :eek:0

It would also have helped keep you calmer as you would know that there are things prepared for such an event so it would not seem so drastic. Also you would have more confidence in that you could solve what nature threw at you. Knowing that you can cope is a lot more comforting than you may appreciate.
So true! I wasn't worried at all. I had a sort of checklist in my head of what needed to happen if we were evacuated. I knew where everything was that we would need to take and everything was ready to go. I'm thankful for all I have learned from everyone on this forum.0 -
VJsmum,
the gators and the snakes are out there. My mother lives a few miles away and she called to tell me a bobcat was sitting on the driveway snarling at her. It's all part of living here. It becomes second nature to look under the car for gators and to watch out for snakes after a while. I don't like it a bit but we moved here to care for my father in law. He's 89 and won't leave Florida.0
