  • I've just ordered two of the oblong cast iron casseroles from Sainsbobs, 1 large and 1 small, I'm hoping they will fit into an old cool box for hay box cooking if necessary. Very good price in the sale.
I'm starting to find it hard to get things past my husband as he has taken over unpacking the shopping delivery for me. He keeps saying "Had you forgotten you bought this last week and we haven't used it?" Err, silly me :o! Never, mind it won't go off.
How long do we think I can keep this going before he starts to wonder if my memory problems need investigating:rotfl:
Not dim ;) .....just living in soft focus :p

Forgot to mention about the crockpot heater.

I read that because you have large candles doesn't mean the heat will be greater. It is the amount not the size of the flames. So, I am going to melt some old candles into a tuna tin (will just sit it on top of the crock) and then put about 5 wicks into the tin to set.

That should give me a lot of heat from a small area.

    ;)

I have some old tall candles that we don't use, a) they are all bent, b) don't like tall candles, I think tea lights seem to be safer if handled and positioned properly. I will just pull the wicks out of those and cut down to make smaller ones for this.

    :)

    Hi All
I have been trying out the crock pot/flower pot heater idea (with candles..pot mounted on bricks).
The crock gets nice and hot, but I am wondering...
what is the point of the crock??...wouldn't the candles alone (ie with no crock) just provide the same amount of heat??? Am i being really stupid and missing something obvious!! Whats the point of the crock??!!

    thanks all!
  • SIEGEMODE love, the world has always been a mad place with things going on that we'd rather weren't and people making decisions that effect us adversely like going to war the big difference between now and yesteryear is that we have 24 hour media coverage and the drip, drip, drip of bad news is making the world seem like a very bleak and darkly dangerous place. I won't say there is nothing to be concerned about but way back when we'd have had the news 3 weeks after the event had kicked off and finished and we'd have had the ending of it not the possible scenarios constantly changing with each newscast and top ups on the half hour to keep us anxious. This world isn't a bad place really there are billions of us 'ordinary' folks going about our daily lives, doing the best job we can with what we have and getting on with life and being as good a person as we can. The bad guys are very few in the grand plan of things and we'd be terribly unlucky if we were caught up in anything they perpetrate. As always wise and balanced words. I guess this is one of the few places where I can vent and share my opinions without being ridiculed. As a carer I'm rather isolated and life is quite insular so my lappy is my link to what's really happening outside. I'm really quite a balanced and sensible individual, honestly I am. I guess if we didn't see things with such awareness of their consequences then we wouldn't be preparing for possible shtf scenarios. I tend to think of this thread as a collection of friends that I just haven't (and am unlikely to) meet yet, but that are like minded and supportive and helpful.

At least the concern over current world events is helping me concentrate on trying to organise my environment and priorities which is a good thing. I think first on that list is reclaiming the cake from the freezer and the spare butter icing from the fridge:D made last week.
  • VJ's Mum. My son and I had a joint bank account when he went to uni. Neither of us could overdraw (haha!) but it meant that if he was seriously low on dosh or his loan didn't come through, etc. etc. I could top it up, subject to having the money of course.

It did throw up just how much money he was spending on his social life and in pubs and also brought to my attention just how expensive his clothing tastes were.

It worked for the lonnnnnng five years that he was at uni but it was the first thing we both wanted to end after he graduated.

Almost a foot of rain in 24 hours here. A few blocks away people were evacuated. Lake almost to my back door. Thanks to all the things I learned here I was ready if we had to leave. Water receding and fingers crossed we have no more rain.

My husband went to stand on the dock and the water was up to his thighs.

It would also have helped keep you calmer as you would know that there are things prepared for such an event so it would not seem so drastic. Also you would have more confidence in that you could solve what nature threw at you. Knowing that you can cope is a lot more comforting than you may appreciate.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

SorryIMoved - does that mean you have to watch for  'Gators?

Thanks for the advice. She has agreed to some water and the lamp - I will sneak some cans of beans and spaghetti into her shopping.

I like the prepaid card idea but OH says just to top up her bank account if we need to. I still might do it though.

Car Tetris is about to begin. More worried about OH holding it together than me - he got very upset last night. Not in front of her thank goodness. Hopefully he will be ok when he sees her settled.

  • VJsMUM I know how you feel but just consider this, your lovely girl is the product that you've made her, you've given her good principles to live by, you've given her a good education, you've helped her to grow strong wings and taught her to fly high. She will be more than ready to take that first solo flight because you and your hubby have taught her how to do it properly. Yes you'll miss her and it does take a bit of time to become accustomed to a different dynamic in the home but hang on to that wonderful knowledge that you've launched a sound girlie into the career choice that she worked for and wanted. Then sit back and watch her grow and succeed and thrive, Lyn xxx.
  • VJsmum, thinking of you! It does seem strange & empty at first, but by the end of the course, it seems strange when they come home again. Quite possibly, still with the tins etc. still intact... there are some in DS3's room that I smuggled into his luggage when he first went, four years ago, in case of disaster! Two of mine went at the same time, which felt like a huge dislocation; now, on the rare occasions they're all here together, the house seems impossibly full and I do wonder how we ever lived like that. Hardest of all was seeing DS3 off for his year abroad - he did languages - in Chile; he really couldn't take anything extra, we didn't know what would be available to him, or whether money could get to him quickly if needed, and he's not the most streetwise bunny - rather like Sheldon Cooper, in fact - but he coped and came back intact & healthy & even a bit wiser. As Lyn says, you've trained her well, she'll fly & fly high.
