I'm happy and I shall tell you why, but first off, apologies in advance to thriftwizard...............
Just got a dozen Le Parfait jars in the c.s. at 50p each. And, and I can hardly believe my luck, an immaculate copy of One Second After by William R Forstchen for £1.
Yipppppeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes, I feel so darned lucky I could almost levitate with glee. Plus a big bagful of fruit and veg from the Magic Greengrocer for £1.
Made up for a bit of a pants day at t'office, and then some.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

You think you will enjoy. It's a good read.Yeah, that's the going rate for it 2nd hand. I shall look forward to digging into that.
It was blind luck, it was just lying sideways on the top of a row of other books, flaunting itself at me, so to speak. Never ever saw a copy of it before and it isn't in the library.
As it was close to the jar cache, I did wonder if I'd come across a prepper's decluttering session, but it was just one of those random happy incidents.
thriftwizard, when you're reading, can I ask your professional advice? The wire parts of the Le Parfait jars have a slight touch of corrosion. Not much, doesn't affect the functionality but doesn't look brilliant. What would be your best advice for cleaning them up? I was thinking mebbe Brill0 pad, or is there a better way?
I'm planning to take them apart (metal off the jar and rubber seals off the lids) to clean them very thoroughly, and sterilise with Milton. All but one of the jars are used and I gave all a good pre-purchase sniff, and it doesn't seem to be vinegar/ pickle type thingy, but they will be better once thoroughly cleaned and allowed to air-out. All advice gratefully received.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I've been growing ginger in the bathroom this summer - from ginger root in the supermarket - it is a dead easy plant to grow (slow to start, but amazing given it was a dried up root for grating), the leaves smell of ginger when ruffled and it is bulking out the rhizome, so fresh ginger might be a plant you'd want to grow - I need to see how it does in the winter, whether my cold house and the short days kill it off/or it acts as a viable perennial.
Couldn't afford new plants this year so have been experimenting witha limited number of foods to see if I can grow anything from slivers of food purchases - leek ends were great for really pretty alium flowers in the garden, I didn't look after them in the right way to get new edible leeks from them, but the ginger has been my best success so far - and I love ginger
Thanks lobbyludd, I will have to try thatBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Elaine yes what fuddle said - grab it. Because in a cold winter, the difference between a crocheted acrylic blanket and a heavy pure wool one is ginormous.
This is my stove - http://www.plumbnet-uk.com/store/images/uploads/Parkray%20cumbria%20folder%20cover%20xx.jpg
But I keep saying this like a parrot lol - don't confine yourselves to a wood burner! The price of logs will go higher and higher and you'll be no better off. Get a multi-fuel one, that burns coal as well. Coal is like the real wool, its far hotter when you really need it to be. And also you can burn all sorts of rubbish on it.
mardatha that looks like the one that was my first choice, but it wouldn't fit into the gap
I have a Parkray multifuel and love, love, love itBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I'd just use 00-gauge wire wool, GQ, with a bucketful of elbow-grease. If it pleases you to go shiny, you could use a tiny smidgeon of AutoGlim or similar, but the wire wool on its own will do the job.

Well, for anyone who isn't close to a B&M Bargains, this might be a good option.
Price is £28-80 (with free UK delivery), making it just 87p more expensive, than getting the same quantity from B&M.
ETA: In case anyone is wondering, how much cooking you will get for your £28-80, as some of you may remember, I did a test a while back, to determine how long one cannister will last.
Well, based on that test, those 28 cannisters will last around 42 hours (on full power) and boil around 308 litres of water.
Just de-lurking to add - we ordered and paid for some of these last year, but had to have our money refunded as no-one would deliver them for Amazon! Don't know why they're still 'selling' them. It would be a good bargain if we could get them delivered to us! We eventually bought some on offer at Go Outdoors.2025 Fashion on the ration
