Elaine yes what fuddle said - grab it. Because in a cold winter, the difference between a crocheted acrylic blanket and a heavy pure wool one is ginormous.
This is my stove - http://www.plumbnet-uk.com/store/images/uploads/Parkray%20cumbria%20folder%20cover%20xx.jpg
But I keep saying this like a parrot lol - don't confine yourselves to a wood burner! The price of logs will go higher and higher and you'll be no better off. Get a multi-fuel one, that burns coal as well. Coal is like the real wool, its far hotter when you really need it to be. And also you can burn all sorts of rubbish on it.0 -
Have done a big food shop this morning, a lot of dried goods, spices, toilet roll, pharmacy items, tins and baking goods. As a Scot am getting worried about the vote next week. I see this as my time to be prepared for the SHTF. Have been saving supermarket stamps and nectar points incase all his talk of losing the pound goes ahead. Goodness knows what value a scottish £1 will have!:eek:Sealed pot challenge member no 1057

I've been growing ginger in the bathroom this summer - from ginger root in the supermarket - it is a dead easy plant to grow (slow to start, but amazing given it was a dried up root for grating), the leaves smell of ginger when ruffled and it is bulking out the rhizome, so fresh ginger might be a plant you'd want to grow - I need to see how it does in the winter, whether my cold house and the short days kill it off/or it acts as a viable perennial.
Couldn't afford new plants this year so have been experimenting witha limited number of foods to see if I can grow anything from slivers of food purchases - leek ends were great for really pretty alium flowers in the garden, I didn't look after them in the right way to get new edible leeks from them, but the ginger has been my best success so far - and I love ginger:AA/give up smoking (done)0 -
Thank you for your kind thoughts. Ever the practical, Lovely Hubs and I are arranging to update our wills because you never know what lies in store. Apologies if I've made others sad.
Trying to do one big job a year on the house, we have a small multi-fuel stove in the sitting room but the flue is on the top and there is not room for a pan. I think there may have been an open range with bread oven in the dining room years ago but people have "modernised" the house. We're busy trying to "old fashioned" it again :rotfl: I thought that a cook stove would be really, really, very expensive but have found a place that sells second-hand one's that are just.... very expensive (still can't afford one but the saving up time will be less IYSWIM)!
I like the look of an Esse one... a girl can dream.
I always have Chinese Five Spice in the cupboard and am a fan of Worcester sauce.
Have always bought blankets from the charity shops whenever I've seen them for our old dog's bed. If they've washed up well they've gone in the blanket box for us instead. You don't see them much anymore as people have gone over to duvets.
Anything to save money on fuel bills but I draw the line at Liberty bodices! Anybody remember them? Not dim.....just living in soft focus

Hi all
catching up as always
I am a knitter and go to a wee craft club each week, in my local church. We knit for charity and especially knit and crochet baby blankets and wee jumpers for newborns. If you can buy a knitted blanket or crocheted one do buy them when you see them in a charity shop as they are so warm and cheap to buy. The price of yarn is expensive now and I buy it a lot but there is nothing as nice as a hand knitted blanket I think
Charity shops are great for picking up a bargain or two, and I love to have a good old rummage when I am in town. The weather here has been really lovely and I believe where we are it is to last to Saturday at least. Lifts the soul Have a great week everyone x

DOVELING if you have the room in your hearth to take an old fashioned range there are places that refurbish victorian ones and even make new victorian ones with a coal hearth and an oven beside them. You can even find them on Fleabay. Some even have the tank for water heating too.0

Just a quick post during the few minutes break we are getting in horrendous thunderstorms. This one has lasted for four hours so far and shows no sign of disappearing any time soon. I feel very sorry for the tourists who have spent their hard earned money to spend days sitting in their damp apartment here with very little to do.
We had torrential rain earlier and it has refilled our sterna (water tank ) which we emptied a couple of weeks ago. It really feels like December weather at the moment.
We got a call this morning that the part had arrived to fix the car door locking system. It had been stuck in Athens due to the bad weather. My OH went to get it sorted and I had an hour in the gym. We both decided it best to go shopping while the going was good as we knew the storms were closing in on us. I got lots of different sauces at Lidl which were reduced to 60 cents due to overbuying on their part, and they have a use by date of 2015. I also stocked up on a few things as they will not get brought over from the mainland if the storms continue.
I don't know if anyone saw the news but there was quite a big flare yesterday and Northern England, Ireland and Scotland may see some impressive Aurora from tomorrow night onwards. I do envy you if you get to see them. It could also affect communications and signals anywhere so bear that in mind. We almost always have problems here when there is a magnetic storm.
Right, the lightning is moving closer again so off to unplug. I am really enjoying reading all your news and ideas. Love to all xxx0 -
thriftwizard wrote: »Could it be because our power supply isn't in the hands of the Grubbymint any longer, but those of private companies, who would have to spend - sorry, invest - rather a lot of money on building new plants? Money which would not then be available for their shareholders' dividends?
There is also a conflict of interest in that a tight energy supply means that they can charge higher prices and avoid having to invest at all. if they were banned from paying dividends or bonuses if they had to raise prices or impose power cuts they might actually do something. As it stands there is no incentive to invest. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
