  • We have a woodburning stove in our den. Its lovely in the evening to look at as it has glass doors so that you can see the flames and it gives off great heat. The top is flat and one could easily use it for 4 or 5 pans, kettles, etc.
One of my great finds for this winter (or summer) in case of power outage is a small gas generator. Its old but runs great and is big enough to power the small fridge, the furnace blower fan or a window fan in summer.
Now to lay in an emergency supply of firewood and gasoline.
  • By "gas generator", do you mean one which runs on actual gas (propane, butane, domestic gas, etc.), or one which runs on, what we in the UK call, petrol

:D Now, now, maryb, I have mentioned that I don't have a car on many occasions. But I do similar things when speed-reading, particularly at this time of night.

I was seriously-smitten by this bow. It's very angular but I have been fascinated by stuff which folds up as long as I can remember. That you can effectively own a stealth longbow which is actually a tad shorter than the arrows it fires is very interesting to me.

I wonder if it has guided arrows for those with limited vision, or carp shots :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

:p It was dead funny because the guy who'd bought it was shooting it for the first time, too, it had just been shipped to him. He usually shoots a bow with a sight, not a longbow without a sight and was at total sixes-and-sevens until I gave him a few tips. After that, we were knocking seven bells outta the target like good 'uns, not sending them all over the range. Thank goodness for the stop-curtain thingy behind the targets or they'd be some serious dents in that wall. I've got totally wicked and very sharp steel target points on my arrows.

Anyroad, if I can shoot with my varifocal lenses and not-terribly-well-coordinated bod, I reckon anyone can.

doveling, I am sorry to hear that your friend has been killed. You are very right about priorities, we should always remember to stop and smell the roses and not be so obsessed with what may happen that we forget the joys of living in the moment. Life is fleeting, and precious.

I wasn't listening to Radio 4 to catch that feature. I never have the radio on that early, although I am normally up at 6-ish (thin-walled flats) but I have almost given up on mainstream news as it's annoying me so much. I still know what's going on in the world, just don't want to hear the beggars broadcast into my own home whilst having brekkie etc. Politicians are notably bad for your blood pressure, don't you find?

Very pleased with all the tips about seasonings and will get the notebook out later and take the hints. Keep 'em coming, lovely peeps. I'm all for good tips which are economical as if you have to spend a fortune on seasoning, those lentil dishes ain't so cheap are they?

    The bl**dy idiots!

They just finished demolishing Didcot A which was a perfectly working power station.

Okay, it produced a lot of pollution, but it should have been taken over by the government as a strategic reserve.

Please God they do this with the others rather than demolishing them.
  • jko Germany have just built 12 new coal fired plants, you can't make it up.
Time the cartels were renationalised, they have scammed us for every penny and I am especially angry about the 50% drop in prices that hasn't been passed on to the customers. Why haven't they built new power stations and I am not talking Nuclear, they are too risky and it is nigh impossible to safely dispose of the waste. I am talking the new clean burning ones that Germany has built
