  • Aaaarrrrghghgh. The S has just H our F. OH has been sacked on totally spurious, trumped up charges. Long and complicated story, but we have been on to ACAS and lawyers in the past few weeks and now it looks as if it is all ramped up. Last year we won a NINE year legal battle (totally unrelated!), so need more litigation like a hole in the head, but perhaps I should just see it as practice for this? Better clear the dining room table for the blizzard of paperwork which will doubtless descend on us. Feeling very p*ssed off and wobbly. We are in the habit of being pretty frugal so will just have to tighten up, though I had really hoped that having survived the last legal merry go round things could begin to ease off a bit. Sorry to rant, but suspect I will be in need of a bit of support in the next few weeks and months - hopefully not years! Thanks to all of you - this thread keeps me sane (ish ...). xx

the cake you've been around for years and I had never thought you were dealing with a horrid and on going issue. So sorry you're having to deal with more rubbish and a loss of income too. You're frugal but more than that, you're OS! ACAS are so impartial you would think they were lying down talking to you but they know their stuff. I wish you well in all this. Stress is definitely of the S variety even when finances can be coped with :( x

Yes Cake, roll sleeves up and sharpen wee teethies :)
Fuddle my granny had a range and my mum had a coal fire and a boiler, and I have a coal stove but unfortunately it's set into the chimney so you can't cook on top of it. Simple always works better and it's not a lot of hard work - just empty ash and top up with coal once every 24 hrs.

Been MIA for a while as busy, but still skin read and lurk.

After GQ's post about trench composting...I have been doing this today as I don't have a garden bin at the moment or anywhere to have a bonfire. I am amazed at how much stuff fits in the whole one you have chopped it up and then smashed it with a spade for a while..!!!.

I think this will be really good for me as I don't have much space or a bin, but will be able to get rid of lots of garden rubbish dug in and left to rot over the winter in the next few weeks.

I hadn't heard of this before, so thanks for the info GQ.

Right...off to dig then off to beach for a swim in the sea, it may be the last nice day for a while.

Sending best wishes to the cake also.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

:) With a tiny bit of planning, you could trench across all of your available space in the next few months and compost one trench at a time. Smashing stuff up with the spade is good, the more edges a piece of organic material has, the more entrance points there are for microbial life to break it down.

Glad the idea has been helpful, it's an oldie but a goodie. Hope you enjoy your swim.

:( Yes, there is an awful lot of electicity being wasted, both in homes and in businesses and even streetlighting, such as were the timer is wrong and the light is on during the day.

I cannot for the life of me work out why a commerial premises has its building uplit by wall-mounted lights even on the brightest summer's day, as one near my home does. Electricity must be far too cheap.

I use just shy of 2 kWh at home per 24 hours and am careful to watch what I'm doing. I still get shocked that I know people who will leave large TVs running in empty rooms for hour after hour and other such examples of pointless waste.
I use around 10 KWhr per day, but then I am home all day and even use my microwaves to bake. Half of my usage is a fridge freezer and I have no control over that as I rent. Though my bills are the same as a friend who is out most of the time, so I cannot be doing too badly. In cash terms my bills are the same as they were in 1999. So I have managed to cut my usage to keep that at level.

When I lived in a suburb near here some years ago, the street lights went out at 11pm and stayed off until 4.30 am. While many street lights can be replaced with high efficiency bulbs they could save more by turning them off completely. Why do they need to be on all night?
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

    Afternoon all.

Being half way through clipping my holly hedge, and having to either take clippings to the tip, or pay £1 a bag for the dustmen to take them, I am very interested in this trench composting.

However, holly doesn't really compost at the best of times. It just seems to dry up.

Would it compost if buried? Isn't there a danger of producing a trench of holly saplings? :)
