what are your thoughts on this??
IS have a fairly good media campaign management team.
Whether that will result in increased unrest in Chechnya is debatable given the problems there over at least 20 years.
Though it may give Western leaders a needed in with Syria, if Putin handles that side of negotiations regarding the eradication of IS (or ISIS/ISIL). (And the western leaders and Putin cooperating would reduce other tensions, ie Ukraine.)0 -
this isn't sounding good re-electric as we have our big chest freezer in work with all our pork in it... I have at least 2 pigs in there ( all jointed and vac packed etc)
think we better start eating pork every day, just incase power does go down...
Might also pick up some new Hot water bottles...Work to live= not live to work0 -
CTC could you cure some of it? make hams or bacon? that would give you much longer keeping qualities without having to rely on the electricity. The other alternative is to can it the american way in kilner type jars but for that you do need a pressure canner to get the right temperatures for it to store safely for any period of time.0

I wouldn't have a clue where to start with curing etc.. we leave all that to the butcher in the slaughter house... I know all the bacon has gone, and a lot of the gammon joints we had done have gone..
Will just have to eat loads of pork...it is fab meat.. even though I say so myself, BUT.. you do need a break and eat some other meats too lol..
Think I will get a leg joint out of the freezer, they are huge... approx. 4.5 kgs its like a joint the flintstones would have on their table lol..Work to live= not live to work0 -
CTC would the butcher in the slaughterhouse be able, for a price obviously, to salt your pork in a brine tub? it would keep very well and he's the most likely person to have the necessary knowledge to do it?0

Mrs L, don't forget plain porridge oats and raisins to make a simple muesli. Mixed with UHT milk or reconstituted dry milk, that's another thing you can eat without cookingIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

Have you considered a solar power system?
One of these

powered by solar panels might be a very good system to maintain the freezer. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -

"The epitome of unlimited, portable backup power for complete peace of mind...
Ideal for: Laptop, Mini Fridge, TV, Backup, Emergency, Lights"
I'm afraid it wouldn't come close to being able to power a freezer.
And 160 hours charging to power a laptop for 20 hours is probably less useful than you would like.0 -
Well the predicted chaos on the roads for Newport just hasnt happened in my experience!!! Drove my usual route and tbh the roads were very, very quiet, spookily so! Decided that the police would be looking elsewhere so put Kings of Leon on loud and drove very fast down the bypass becos I could! OK not very prep/SHTF/ not drawing attention but fun anyway! Centre of Newport was like a ghost town, a few people walking to work but not even the usual drunks, beggars, detritus usually hanging around. TBH today was probably one of the least stressful commutes to work I have ever had, probably one of the fastest too. I am now probably going to be stuck in hours of chaos and traffic jams trying to get home just for posting this! :rotfl:
Im in my office now and the only indication that anything abnormal is going on is the constant noise of helicopters going overhead to the Celtic Manor, you would of thought with them all signing up to reducing climate change that they could have shared helicopters!! Litterally sounds like a war zone and they have been constant for the last hour.
Anyway will update you if anything worth sharing on my journey home, Elaine
I'm not surprised. I've made sure I am way way away from some things I can think of today and will be doing the same tomorrow, whilst remembering the local radio presenter that decided (by sheer coincidence of course;)) to play that Frankie Goes to Hollywood song of "Two tribes".
I think most of us just don't want to be reminded we are having to share the same planet with those we wouldn't choose to have to share it with sometimes....
I've moved away from "trying to change them" to "trying to avoid them". Maybe that's a sign of getting more cynical in old(er) age...0 -
Lyn I awoke to the electricity headline but forgot all about it until I saw your post. I will go swot up on the issues. Our home is an all electric house so not great news.
Please could you remind me about the kelly kettle? What can it bring to me in terms of managing that a camping kettle can't. You know me for making do [STRIKE]being tight[/STRIKE] but if it will be a life safer than I would invest.0
