Mygawd GQ = you sure know how to put a positive take on bad circumstances.
I would have forty fits at the thought of living in Shoebox Towers for as long as a month even, from what you've said about it over many moons.
I'll take my hat off to you for coping with the situation and even retaining a SOH about it...because I know I personally certainly couldn't do so.
I'm no-one's idea of a wimp...."brave" is the usual description made of me these days (courtesy of having moved across country and to a very different area)....but Shoebox Towers:eek::eek::eek:
I must say I admire you for putting up with a combination of Shoebox Towers/that health condition you mention/M.E./low income, as I know I just wouldn't personally. So you do have my admiration for that. Hopes it doesn't sound patronising (as it certainly aint meant that way)...and I know we all "have our cross to bear", but I just wouldnt carry half that load personally.
I get what you say about not "assuming that people around you are benign, honest or stable" and have certainly come crashing down to Earth with great force myself from having tried to assume that in the past and now have a cynics definition of "Middle Age is when you have no illusions left (ie about the human race basically being good)" but whew.....to your circumstances.0 -

I have tried thinking and prepping for unrest/war etc and it makes me physically/mentally ill, which we talked about a few days ago...
If you have planned with lots of flexibility then you should be able to adapt to things that none of us have even considered. I am planning to add lots of camping equipment to my preps. At least I will be able to take cheap holidays if nothing does happen, which will keep the cost of my holidays to a manageable level. If things do erupt then I will be able to cope if I have to move. If there are power cuts I will have solar rechargers and gas stoves to cook, all the sorts of things that are handy while camping. If it is dual use then it is not a waste.COOLTRIKERCHICK wrote: »I take my hat off to people like QG who live in places where there is always something going on with neighbours etc.. I'd rather not carry that load personally either, but I wasn't given the choice about serious health problems. S**t happens. You go through the anger and the why-poor-little-me?! and all that carp and you have the choice of snivelling or you have the chance to woman-up, develop an off-kilter sense of humour and an ability to take pleasure in small things.
At the moment, I'm taking a very real pleasure in the sudden cessation of loud music from outside and tea and flapjacks. Life is good in many respects and I have many blessings (not least being the off-kilter sense of humour :rotfl:).Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

GQ.. you made some great points, which I wouldn't have thought of about living where you live... an umm yes I have a place that is own a country lane..lol.... but it right at the back of houses lol..
I need to do a prep top up shop this week... salt, more sugar... etc..Work to live= not live to work0 -
i too live in a version of shoebox towers......which has its moments ... in terms of drunks on the block etc ... the odd bit off of bother .... doesnt seem as hectic as shoebox towers .... but salford precinct nearby made national news in the Aug 11 riots... where local youths tipped over and set fire to bbc news waggon.......i suppose if you seem like you dont belong here the environment can be a bit hostile...... but i grew up round ..used to be 10 or 12 of us going out in the locals..... my mam was a well known and liked barmaid for 20 odd years (spain 3 times a year on her tips) im a quiet lad ... but not all my family is si the local vernacular ive got pedigree .. but ive not been in trouble ... so seen as a straight head...... how would this translate in a TSHTF scenario locally .. would i be left alone? targeted ?....invited to join group ... its hard to say0

Learning new words here for the day here daz. I wouldn't care to hazard a guess in your circumstances. I would have thought probably invited to join in...despite being a "straight head".
It's so easy to show up as "not fitting in". Someone who hadn't even been in my home and had only ever seen me very casually dressed and chatted to me in the street told me they would be nervous about offering me a cup of coffee in theirs because they knew I'd have mine differently and proceeded to tell me exactly what coffee I have and how with perfect accuracy:rotfl:". I did accept a cup of theirs anyway....:rotfl:
 at the thought that, just by looking at a person, you can tell little "daily details" like that about them. Though I guess we all do it...as my estate agent described the mother of the buyer of my last house to me in one phrase and I recognised who the woman was instantly when she came walking down the street past my house one time and yep...I'd have described her the same way...0 -
I think that if you are in a local community and known that you will be safe. No matter how rough it might be. If any trouble does erupt like rioting then you might actually be okay. It will be the police that will be the enemy, and ultimately TPTB.It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0

what are your thoughts on this??
its a glorious day here, so this afternoon, I will be picking off the dried seed pods of the mange touts, and storing them ready for next year..its the first time I have tried keeping pea/mange tout seeds, so fingers crossed they will store ok, and I have saved a few pennies ( infact the seeds were given to me in the first place) and help me start prepping my own seeds in the future..Work to live= not live to work0 -
BBC news this morning was talking about electricity capacity being depleted due to the closure of 2 nuclear reactors with problems, they said this winter would see the energy companies having to use the available slack in the system to keep our lights on, not very reassuring as a thought. I think part of my prepping from now on will be making sure that we always have in a supply of stored foods that can be consumed cold and without needing to be warmed or cooked in any way. Most likely oatcakes, crispbreads, spready things like peanut butter, jars of pate, jams I already make, and I'm going to get some cartons of various fruit juices and extra dried fruit and nuts and chocolate. I'm also going to top up on small cans of ham/pork loaf/luncheon meat type things that we can use up in one go thus not having to worry about the fridge being off. I'll also be getting in fair amounts of cuppasoups and cappuccino sachets and instant mash as we'll be able to use the kelly kettle for hot water if we need to. Uncertain times make for thinking don't they???0

Well the predicted chaos on the roads for Newport just hasnt happened in my experience!!! Drove my usual route and tbh the roads were very, very quiet, spookily so! Decided that the police would be looking elsewhere so put Kings of Leon on loud and drove very fast down the bypass becos I could! OK not very prep/SHTF/ not drawing attention but fun anyway! Centre of Newport was like a ghost town, a few people walking to work but not even the usual drunks, beggars, detritus usually hanging around. TBH today was probably one of the least stressful commutes to work I have ever had, probably one of the fastest too. I am now probably going to be stuck in hours of chaos and traffic jams trying to get home just for posting this! :rotfl:
Im in my office now and the only indication that anything abnormal is going on is the constant noise of helicopters going overhead to the Celtic Manor, you would of thought with them all signing up to reducing climate change that they could have shared helicopters!! Litterally sounds like a war zone and they have been constant for the last hour.
Anyway will update you if anything worth sharing on my journey home, Elaine
