I agree on the Mora Knives.
Really are top quality and so cheap! Think I have about 4 of them I love them that much.
Plus they have non of that stupid rubbish on them like saw blades and serrated edges. Which serve no purpose as far as I am concerned.
I recommend you get the thicker 3.2mm blade, makes an excellent wood splitting tool! Split some quite thick wood with mine.
Also they are dead easy to sharpen, just a single angle each side. None of the double bevel stuff.
The best companion to them is the Bacho folding saw.
Again quite a thick blade so doesn't kink when trying to cut wood which some of the cheaper ones do!
I have used mine loads outdoors and also for renovating the house, blade is still sharp as ever.0 -
The Sunday paper today is saying that many people are panic buying large amounts of food in response to the upping of the security levels which I guess is to be expected. More worrying to me by far is the BBC news saying that Russia is virtually at war with Europe over Ukraine and the implications that come with that regarding the gas supply this winter and beyond. Having said that I'm going to aquire some extra stocks of rice, lentils, flour and pasta and tinned meat to have in reserve just in case we get problems, also extra tea bags and dried skimmed milk as the world is definately a better place after a cuppa. We'll have to wait and see if this is just brinkmanship or if there will be serious fisticuffs between the opposing sides, hopefully not but those poor folks in Ukraine will suffer whether it happens or not.
We're set up with logs and solar lamps already but I'd much rather not find us lacking so I've got my thinking cap on and am going to revue all the stores to see if we're lacking things or actually have gaps. I'll only however buy in things I know we'll use even if it is in the long run, and lets hope that's the case!!!0 -

Anyone know where these type Gas canisters are cheapest at the moment? http://www.halfords.com/camping-car-seats/camping-caravanning/cooking-dining-equipment/halfords-bright-spark-camping-gas
At Halfrauds they are 3 for 2. So £1 each basically.
Is there anywhere even cheaper?0 -
Don't know anywhere, selling them cheaper than £1 each
Once the 3 for 2 deal is over, then B&M bargains (4 for £3-99), or £world (£1 each) are the best prices I know of.
However, if I read that can correctly, it's a butane/propane mix, whereas the B&M and £world ones are butane only.
This won't be a problem, if they are only for use in above freezing conditions.
OTOH, if they're for use in potentially below zero conditions (eg. outdoors in the middle of winter), then you'll need the butane/propane ones, even if they are a bit pricier.0 -
Well B&M are cheaper than at £3.99 for 4.
But I can get 3% Cashback at Quidco so Halfrauds are still cheaper over all, although I have to wait a while for the cash back.
These are not to be used out doors really. Just in case I loose power as all cooking is done through electric (By my choice!)0 -
Well B&M are cheaper than at £3.99 for 4.
By about 1/3 of a penny per canister.
Of course, when the 3 for 2 expires, the B&M ones will be quite a bit cheaper. These are not to be used out doors really. Just in case I loose power as all cooking is done through electric (By my choice!)
Shouldn't be a problem then.
Just buy the cheapest you can find, be they butane or butane/propane mix.0 -

This is so mad. I believe Russian tanks rolled into Hungary back in 1968, and the west did diddly squat about it.
Now we are way more dependant on Russia than then, we are making a fuss about parts of Ukraine wanting to revert to Russia. Well given that Ukraine can't afford to pay for gas for it's people, who can blame them?
I think we need to start a 'Don't attack Russia' movement don't we? Who's with me?0 -
looks as though I might have to think about constantly walking my land to make sure no one cuts down/nick our trees/wood
my parents an MIL only have gas central heating.... so I would be very concerned about how they will keep warm, without my putting the heebeeegeebees/scaring them..Work to live= not live to work0 -
CTC, people have been keeping warm in climates far more severe than ours for centuries without gas central heating. I don't have as much insulation or as many alternative heat sources as I'd like, but I do have thermals and woollies, and I bet your parents do too. With a bit of common sense and luck, in the sense that we don't get a '62/'63-type winter, they'll be fine. Maybe you could casually ask them if they're prepared, "just in case of power cuts?"
