  • Seriously folks, are the electricity substations being maintained and checked these days? I ask this because the one up the road that we are linked into tripped some years ago just before christmas as there is a sumac tree next to it on a public footpath and the shoots from the tree were the cause. Today I walked the lurcha past it and thanks to Grumswifies post had a look over the fence around it and it is covered with dusty cobwebs and the gravel area around it is a small forest of sumac shoots again this year. I wonder if the power companies are charged with its upkeep or is it the national grid?? whoever it is hasn't done anything to it for some time by the looks of it, how does your local substation look, any maintenance been done in past memory???

I'd recommend a stove top kettle (price 2 or 3 pounds tops), as it will save gas, compared to boiling water in an open pan/mess tin.

    Yeah, me too.

I'd want something that whistled, as otherwise I might let it boil dry.
  • Kettles also make it easier to fill narrow necked items, such as Hot Water Bottles.

I actually have a whistling kettle kettle that l use on my induction hob but wouldnt want to use it on a campingaz stove. Far to posh!
My beother who lives about 7 miles away also has dodgy supply lastnight. Not good in a city that has about 240,000 people! Maybe it was everyone watching the football, will be prepared for the final on tuesday.

Ah but I dare say you wouldn't hesitate to use it if you had no option ;) At least it is there

I'm guessing it doesn't have a whistle though.

Absolute scorcher up here today - hottest day I think. My prepping today is getting a nice store of vitD and reading the Phoenix and the Carpet :)
:( It's been grey here for days, and chilly and drizzling. Mar's exported her Scottish weather to the sarf, the little beggar. Less of this scorching weather talk, y'hear?

Good job I'm a pale & interesting redhead or I mightn't be getting enough vit D.

Bearing in mind that kettles are so cheap, I'd get one, rather than tie up one of your pans. Suppose you needed it for cooking, or had cooked in it and hadn't enough water to wash it up, and it was also your water-boiling resource?

I am pleased to report that the total haul of blackcurrants (think I got the lot) from the one bush is 12 lb 2 oz. I'm eating one tub of them (not all on the one day) and the rest are either already frozen or being prepped as we speak. Pretty pleased with that, and some of those blackcurrants are the size of blueberries, bless them.

Next week I'll start in on harvesting the broad beans, both the autumn-sown ones which are drying out for dry storage, and the spring-sown ones which are going into the freezer (am having some with my tea tonight).

Have been either at home or on the lottie today and haven't visited the workplace, so haven't got the skinny on how many us were on strike today, but I hope it was a lot. Going to be down several tens of ££ but feel that hearing a rattled Camermoron was almost worth it.;)

Oh, one more thought why you might not want to use your saucepans on a gas ring that you normally use on an electric hob. They say that gas rings slightly warp pans, so when you put them back on the electric hob they won't make good contact.
