I would very much appreciate a "heads up" on weather problems.
I think most of us probably would but don't want to speak for others.
After feeling quite smug when a power cut happened for two hours a few weeks ago (solar lights, candles matches and hot water in vacuum jug for drinks) I got my comeuppance yesterday when suddenly electric went off and switch on electric power board just would not switch back on, all electrics in kitchen were off.
After switching off every appliance we could think of - still no joy.
Eventually after an hour of searching we worked out that it was not a faulty kettle, toaster or iron - but an actual faulty socket that the numpty (er professional builder and designer) that had the house built for his family had bodged.
The sockets are being sorted out next week I hope but it was quite scary when the electricity should be there but half of it could not turn on IYKWIM.
I am pleased that the research I did on the new gas hob meant that it could be lit with a match and did not have a cut out so I could warm up a la leftover chicken curry for lunch.

I know probably nothing will happen on Sunday week, but is anyone making any special preps for that date, in view of the speculation about Christine Lagarde's strange speech back in January?

Really? I dread to think how folk would have coped if that attitude was adopted during WW1 and WW2.
I think we are talking different situations.
During the world wars, there was still a government, and civilian law enforcement, to control and organise things.
In an EOTWAWKI situation (where such control and organisation no longer exists), there will be people who won't think twice about breaking in and, if necessary, killing you and your family, to get hold of your supplies.0 -
in a shtf situation think it would depend on the setting , in the floods as previously mentioned a certain section of the community banded together, however im sure a part of the rogues community would have taken advantage..... in an urban council estate setting , people may band together to a certain extent (wary cooperation) based on how long youve known them.... however i imagine they would revert to survival mode a lot quicker than your average surburbanite, non of the soul searching as depicted in "One second after" but we cant really know until it happens0

I was talking about life today and the feelings connected with hardly knowing your neighbour these days let alone supporting them/each other in difficult times.0

2tonsils I would like to be added to your list as well please.
Good luck with the strike tomorrow GQ, we all need to make a stand against the corporate owned Houses of Westminster.
A lot of people I know who are unemployed are going to join the strike tomorrow as well.
But if Camoron gets his way he will outlaw strikes, this is his latest wheeze

My support is with the strikers. Striking is not something that is done lightly and the fact that many are only getting a 1% increase after a few years of freezes will be suffering when real inflation is much higher than the governments official figures, and ministers are getting 11% this year.
The alternative is that we lose a century of employment rights and we end up returning into a turbulent economy with most people struggling. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
2T I would like very much to have the potential weather information if you'd be kind enough to share it with us. I would much rather have the heads up about potential disruptive events and make preparation for coping (even if they don't then happen) than not know and suffer as a consequence. The worse that would happen in the non event would be having extra precautions in place for the next one that did happen whereas not being prepared but having the event happen would be difficult indeed.
GQ and everyone else forced to take action today look after yourselves and stay safe and stand firm together, good luck to you all.
I agree with you FUDDLE in WW2 there was so much support in the community for all its component members and I wonder if that would eventually happen again today? I think initially there would be panic and civil unrest as there IS the misconception that there must be both 'someone' to blame and 'they' will sort it out, and the worse time would be when there wasn't someone to blame or sort it out!!! After that I think people probably would learn to work together to sort out some of the problems, we're all used to only thinking of our own interests first and foremost but I wonder if we were all in the same mire if the thought that alone you are weaker but together you make a stronger unit and can be an effective workforce would eventually come in to being?
I'm not at all surprised that there was complete helplessness in the aftermath of the sub station fire or that the lady didn't know if her cooker was gas or electric, the young lady worrying about not being able to straighten her hair is typical of youngsters today (DD has even had them turn up with straighteners on D of E camping trips and be completely astounded that there is no electricity). It's the complete disconnect from reality, the living immersed in social media, celebrity culture and peer pressure from facebook etc. there is no concept of being an individual just the need to be a part of the collective and it seems most people these days can't cope with the idea of being a person in thier own right and having the strength to stand by your own individuality and be yourself has been lost. You are expected, even by yourself, to be a clone of everyone else and to not stand out in any crowd by any deviation from the collectives norm, it's very sad isn't it? I hope your electricity supply is restored very soon or there will be some very cross folks round you won't there?0
