Thank you, thriftwizard.
It's not a decision lightly-taken. Not liking leaving the public in the lurch and us customer services peeps are the frontline. The contingency plan seems to involve moving parts of one service into another, to consolidate available numbers on the front line. That presupposes that the people they think they can move aren't striking themselves, which may turn out to be incorrect.
I think the management are expecting the strike to be very well-supported and must be having major tension-headaches about how they can put as many b*ms on seats and voices on phonelines as possible.
Some of my younger colleagues have never been involved in any kind of strike action in their lives and are a bit anxious. Many aren't even union members but don't want to be left holding the fort without their colleagues - for those who do work on Thursday in any striking workplace, it's liable to be a very tough day.
So, please spare a thought for those people, as well. We all have to make our own decisions, but those working will be catching flak from the public and having a tough day.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

GQ I imagine my sister does pretty much a similar job to you, having put two and two together over the years. Bearing in mind our mining roots she isn't striking. She feels she's middle class now (think I have mentioned it before) and being a part-time worker to top up her spending money so she can be mainly a stay at home with her yummy mummy status and social life means she's not interested in progressing or pay rises. She doesn't get it and she's ignorant to what our forefathers did for us. It makes my blood boil but I cannot wholly blame her for anything other than not thinking for herself really.
I will try to reserve the demonisation of the working classes book GQ and thanks because I have a lady who has never lived in a labour MP constituency but is staunch labour/union supporter. She will be very interested in it too I expect as she has a lot of tales to tell me about politics in the 70's and 80's, when I was just kid.0 -
Fuddle, years ago I worked for a public authority which offered a ballot on 'selling' two of our public holidays for a one off payment of £350 (taxed). I was astonished at the 82% yes vote. It went through and I was appalled at the disregard of the previous generations slog to get these holidays passed for very poorly paid public workers.0

I have to say, I'm not really surprised.
I know someone, whose biggest worry about power cuts, is she won't be able to charge her Smart Phone.

spoke to one of our stewards.....who said quite a lot of people are going in anyway because they cant afford to lose a days pay.... i do have some sympathy but if we dont present a united front ... management will be increasingly able to take liberties......its a dificult balancing act0

Hello peeps :hello: Been MIA for a bit, but 'home' now
I remember in the eighties when I was on a training scheme working at an engineering firm. The place was closed shop, so I had to join the union - subs were about £4 a week when I only got £50! - but when we were called out by the convenor TPTB decided that as I was only a gubberment trainee I wasn't allowed to strike!
I've been on strike a couple of times when working in schools - my colleagues and I didn't want to disrupt the kids' time, but my dad always dinned it into me that unions were the only stick you have to hit TPTB, and you ought to support them.
Prepping has ground to a halt due to RL, but this weekend I'm back on the wagon, and have caught up with you all at last!

Well said, that woman.
I'd recommend anyone who has an interest about how we came to be in this parlous state check out Owen Jones' Chavs, the demonisation of the working class. It's a brilliant book and has many of the political players from the seventies and eighties, admitting that they were deliberately pursuing class warfare against the working class in this country. Very thoroughly researched but a very accessible read.
Warning; it'll make you want to sharpen your pitchforks.

I do apologise for being MIA but I have been doing some ''looking forward to the SHTF work''. I managed to get myself onto a huge network of underground/amateur weather geeks who all share information, photographs and videos...as well as accurate weather forecasts you will never get to hear on CNN or the Beeb. My new laptop has been burning up with videos of tornadoes, supercell storms and hailstone like baseballs in the last couple of weeks.....the latest from Germany and Italy (which is still ongoing and just over the water from me).
I got welcomed into the fold after saying that I had suffered a load of prophetic dreams concerning up coming weather events world wide. It seems I am not alone with the dreams, or with the anticipation of such events actually happening soon either.
Since I keep being accused of scare mongering on facebook ( in which case I have deleted them and kept people who do want to hear such things ) I am going to ask if you want me to share advance information about upcoming weather events, including long range warnings that you will never hear on the tv/radio or in the media? My friends do not get paid for these forecasts, nor do they gain anything except thanks from others for doing them.
I just thought a forum for preppers might be interested. Please let me know, I don't want to go upsetting anyone.
Other news in short...my husband had to go to the UK to help his mum cope with the death of her sister. She is okay and is coming over for two weeks on Friday. She is 88 and getting ready to have bowel surgery. The person I was building a website has been lying to me about my money so I have stopped working for her until I am paid in full. It is not a lot but it's the principle of the thing.I am very well, eating a healthy diet rich in fruit and veg , good oils, butter and some protein (all locally produced ).“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. There are many who will not see this coming and will be complaining as soon as it strikes. Fortunately these will be the ones most likely to get their pitchforks out and face Boris's water cannons.
I am still clearing debts and planning all the camping kit I will ever need and will be able to cope once this is completed. Food stocks are high as is toilet paper but I only have several months in store so should get a lot more, but where to store it?It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
My lady said thanks for the book recommendation GQ. She's told me to read The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists as apparently it's about class war. Just checked and it's on free kindle download. Will begin tonight.0
