    :) I'm very excited about the option for mass-blackcurrant-bush-propagation, mustn't get too carried away and end up with a blackcurrant plantation instead of a veggie patch. But should have lots to share around, too.

    Thinking about sunflowers to add to the mixed garden. Lovely for bees and butterflies and also a source of seeds. Not all the heads set seeds perfectly, you get individual sunflower seeds where some parts of the head haven't formed proper seeds, but some parts will be good. Think of that extra nutrition. And you can even let runner beans climb up sunflowers, for extreme cuteness.

    Have worked out that I got about 4 hrs sleep last night and am feeling grim today so have decided no allotmentino, I simply haven't the juice.

  • On the continent where they grow sunflowers as a commercial crop by the field full, wherever there is a cycle/footpath bordering or crossing the field people pull some of the seeds out of the developing sunflowers on the edges of the path and make smiley faces, it's such fun cycling through all the smiles as the flower seeds mature!!!

    thanks for that RAS I thought maybe I had the beginning of a plum explosion . I don't have much room anyway but can manage to stuff in a suprising amount more xxx

    As far as I know Scandinavians eat raw fish. All the time.

    Many moons ago, when I was a young student in Scotlandshire, some of my school pals from here in the Sarf had what can only be described as Funny Ideas about your part of the world.

    Even at 18, I was firmly fixed into my present character (enjoying a harmless wind-up) and when one of my peers from the hometown asked if you could get Channel 4 in Scotland - like it was Ultima Thule or something - I could not resist the opening.

    Yes, Channel 4 is no problem, but there's a bit of an issue with the uni canteen. You see, the Nats won't let them sell anything which isn't Scottish-produced grub, so it's down to haggis and neeps, stovies, porridge, oatcakes and stuff like that. To drink, you can only have Scottish spring water, Irn Bru or whiskey.

    My pal took this all in wide-eyed and believing until I had to tell them that was actually a joke.:rotfl:Doh!

    Although I have travelled in other parts of the world, I have firm views on food. I'm up for unusual dishes later in the day but I don't eat weird things at breakfast, it's too traumatic to the waking brain.

    Otherwise, I only eat it if I can pronounce it, I know what it is, and it had a spine when alive. Not overkeen on it still having eyes, but it's amazing what you can do with a strategically-positioned lettuce leaf. Just ask that girl Eve Eden. And one should always bear in mind Miss Piggy's exhortation to never eat more than you can lift.

    1 large cucumber(peeled and sliced)
    a bunch of fresh dill (stalks removed and chopped fine)
    4 tablespoons of white wine vinegar
    1 tablespoon of sugar
    1 teaspoon of salt
    fresh ground black pepper

    The infernal Whittingstall put out a recipe (last year???) for a cucumber salad that was almost identical and became a staple during the cucumber glut last autumn.

    The big difference being that the dill was replaced by fresh mint. Needs rather more than I expected and IMO needs to be added just before serving rather than pickled in the dressing.

    Not ALL the time MAR, not nearly as often as the Japanese with thier sushi!!! and in defence of the scandinavians the fish is usually salmon and it's cured (no it isn't ill salmon) in salt, sugar, and dill which renders it a sort of cooked, like ceviche which is raw fish in lime/lemon juice. They eat most of thier fish cooked and very nice it is too!!!

    RAS didn't HFW do a programme from Scandinavia where he was fishing? I seem to recall he went to Favican, the very adventurous restaurant and this really is a very common way of preparing cucumber,it would probably work well with mint too but I'm used to having it with dill which is actually also delicious stirred through a potato salad too.
