I've put them through washing machines, tumble dryers and tested them in a metal box under EMP attack.

Bl**dy hell Nuatha. Where did you find one of them?
Regarding old format stuff, I think there's a lot to be said for keeping the old hardware that used it. I have a brand new Super VHS VCR mothballed for just such a need. Also new walkman, two 8 track players, record player, and cd/DVD player.0 -

Although I already knew it, for some reason it came as a shock to me when Max mentioned there are no deposits in banks.
If you remember Hidden Secrets of Money part 4, the very first pound is borrowed into existence together with every subsequent pound. Thus every pound you think you own is just someone else's debt.
By the way, has anyone else's lights been flickering the last couple of days?0 -
Regarding format for long term data storage, would I be correct in thinking, PDF is going to be the most likely data format, to still be available, in decades to come?0

Morning all.
My local autority employer is one of the nearly 300 local authorities which bank with Co Op. Let's pause a moment and imagine the utter chaos which would ensue iif Co Op Bank went t*ts up with little or no warning. Chaos which would effect a lot more than staff like me. Imagine the bin lorries stationary for want of money to buy diesel, as just one fun-filled option. Ick.
Gah. I continue to manage my account with A.N. Other bank at historically low levels, just enough after the bills to offer a £200-£300 buffer. This wasn't much of an adjustment as I have always preferred to do most of my transactions in cash, which I regard as easier to track, more efficient and, above all, anonymous.
I had a sudden rude awakening just after 3 am this morning with about a dozen firefighters attending the address next door. Saucepan fire. No one hurt, the occupant beyond contrite, lots of neighbours popping out to see what was happening and being supportive. As my other neighbour was out all night and the one with the fire was awake, I decided to make bread rolls at 4 am and leave them to prove and have just baked them.
Heck, might as well roll with the changes. Went back to bed but didn't get back off to sleep so feeling a bit ropy, but will have to get on with it; work, errands, archery today.
Hokay, time for some fresh bread rolls, nomnomnom........Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Of course, the one exception to this is coins which are debt free money. Would coins still be accepted if the pound collapsed? I seem to recall reading that in Weimar Germany coins were no longer used, as of course they were only a small fraction of the value of a worthless piece of paper. I guess gold & silver coins would have been okay though.
There is an interesting page here regarding Weimar Germany. It mentions that when the currency was reset, by knocking twelve zeros off it, people's mortgages were re-valued to present day values:

jk0, I am reliably informed that Zimbabweans are presently using US dollar notes and South African coins in place of their own hyper-inflated currency.
I don't know whether this is official policy or the work-around of the people on the ground, as it were.
I would think that as modern coins are base metal (our silver coins haven't had any silver content since the 1940s) they would be valueless if the currency they represented hyper-inflated. Precious metal coins like silver and gold would hold a value in hyper-inflation, which might be more or less than they were purchased for, pre-inflation.
American prepper sites have a lot of people over there convinced that holding their own pre-1965 (silver bearing) currency will give them a viable means of exchange for modest purchases post-SHTF.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

JK yep our lights have been going a bit glitchy and we had a short interruption last night as we were watching the walking dead finale..cue panic stations lol it always happens at an interesting bit!
I'm chasing my tail as always potting on etc and had a good clean indoors yesterday to make up for it,I hate hoovering stairs.
I've been trying out some new flours from the Wessex mill range amongst others will stick the details on here later but very impressed so far.
Need to have a tidy up outside and try to make my garden grow by about 50 feet to accommodate my new fruit trees,OH decided he wanted his own cobnut as he never beats the squirrels to the ones on the field...I ordered the red Williams pear I wanted last year and the bloody ploughman apple, another lord derby cooker as they're brill apples and a patio bramley. I've got the knack of pruning now to restrict their growth so we should be ok *whistles*.. I also got a few patio trees free from my garden mags so it's getting a bit like an orchard here now!
Right, things to do got hospital tomorrow with DS2 so need to squeeze two days work into one today, have a great day all XX0
