Yep, but it only costs 60p (down here at least) to order it through the library service ...

... we have been without a working boiler now for over 3 weeks and it's getting to me. It doesn't bode well I know for a real shtf event but it's being messed about that is getting me down the most and since we are both home 24/7 and both have health issues and I'm OH's carer ...

Erm ... at the risk of stating the obvious, isn't this a story for the local newspaper and /or radio station?

Yay :j:j:jThe engineer arrived and fixed the boiler.

Karmacat and D&DD Thank you for the supporting comments. He wasn't even told about the job until yesterday afternoon by which time he was on a gas leak job in another county. I really despair with organisations these days, customer service and old fashioned values are seriously lacking. I was so down and frustrated last night that I was even tearful on the phone to the insurance claims management company and the young lady was quite sympathetic and has forwarded our case to the complaints dept who should call within 24hrs. I'm usually a strong person and it's really unlike me to break down. I shall be pointing a few things out to them and seeking an apology and perhaps compensation, goodness knows how much more leccy we've used boiling pans and kettles, not to mention waiting around for engineers that haven't been booked in etc and time on the phone. We are lucky that we look after each other as and how we can, but OH has been feeling unwell all week and the cold certainly hasn't helped. I will be making my feelings heard. Recently I've had battles with both H0nda and H0meserve both of which have resulted in cheques and both down to disorganisation and customer service failures. Having ME means I have to pick my battles and right now I'm feeling drained, so maybe I won't be fighting this one too much. For now we are just so happy and grateful to have our heating and hot water back. I do feel a tad wimpish though when it comes to being warm I set the thermostat at 22 degrees and only turn it down to 20 at night. I think I've gone softer with age since I grew up in a house with just 1 coal fire and plenty of drafts.

It has made me think though about the importance of keeping on top of jobs since you never know what's around the corner. Like many areas this spring our water company are flushing the water mains and for 3 weeks we face possible disruptions and brown water. I wonder how many people will be ready after reading the letter. I feel good knowing we have both bottled water and several water carriers at the ready and will cope with the minimum of inconvenience. I am a little worried how ever that it might effect the boiler, but fingers crossed we'll be fine.

Possibly, but OH can't deal with people or stress and we live a pretty insular exsistence because of his problems. We avoid or rather he avoids people at all cost. So drawing attention to this would send him into complete melt down. I also have 6 mths left on this policy and don't want to rock the boat. I shall however be using a different policy provider next time and telling them why.

The house is warming up very slowly but having got so cold it's bound to take a while before we feel cosy again.

Maybe a phone call to that effect to whichever outfit it was that the engineer chappie actually came from?

Something along the lines of ... "Your lovely bloke has just fixed my boiler for me and now the water people are going to flush the mains and I'm worried that's going to jigger the boiler. Can I do anything to make sure it doesn't?"

Got to be worth a try?

Oh, yes, that's a good point guys.

You definitely don't want rusty water to go through a combi boiler. They have a rotating magnet in the pipe to sense the flow when you turn the water on, and any bits of steel in the water will stick to it and possibly jam it.

Hmm this is obviously me not worrying un necessarily then. I was so relieved to have the boiler fixed that I completely forgot to ask the engineer about this. Since we see few people as it is I think I tend to chatter too much when I do come into contact with other human beings and not always about the job in hand, usually it's at shop check outs:rotfl: .

Aw, siegemode, I'm really glad your boiler's working again - simply for the time it wasn't working, you deserve compensation (Virgin Media offered me that for the 10 days my router broke down). Plus time, inconvenience, extra expense, that sort of thing.

Just revel in the heat for now! (And yes, check about rusty water - I'd no idea that happened!).

I don't know anything about gas heating or boilers but I know far too much about ME. You take it easy pet and look after yourself xx.
I was watching the Tudor Farm a few weeks back and really envied them having an open fire to cook on! No hassles no bills no gadgets, just keep kindling and logs handy and off you go. One cauldron one kettle and that's all you need. I could do that!
