Thanks Possession. That's interesting.
It's absolutely staggering though how much energy those tomato plants use for lighting. One plant uses almost as much energy as my house. Could they have made a mistake?
I like the earth shelter greenhouse idea though:

Haven't a clue I'm afraid. Do tomatoes need as much light/heat as cannabis?!0
-
I thought the heat that a lightbulb provided was helpful too ... just shows how much research is needed.2023: the year I get to buy a car0

the grolux lights are high in D3 which we used to use for the repiles... we used to get loads of people coming in buying htem to grow 'plants'
so unless the LED lights have the same spectrum etc... they might be 25% cheaper to run, BUT will your plants take longer to grow/fruit etc due to being a lower spec..
I also agree the heat from the lights also help the plants and mimic summer heat...
I am out on this one.....think I would prefer the tried and testedWork to live= not live to work0 -
Oh, here's another question regarding winter grown tomatoes:
How on earth do they get them pollinated? Do they have to keep the bees awake/alive all winter?
I know with ordinary greenhouses, you keep the door open to let the bees in, but if you are harvesting tomatoes in March, are there even bees around, and would you want to leave the door open at that time of the year?
Edit: Just found this feather method:

My OH would get jealous though if I told him I was off out the greenhouse to tickle my toms...lol
I still haven't been forgiven for ordering my led growlites from Ebay,OH is in our sorting office and it came in a box clearly marked so all the posties now think I'm growing pot..0 -
lol...growing pot...
BUT..... If SHTF it might be useful to know the basic medicinal side of some plants...Work to live= not live to work0 -
Love the log stack
I dream of a wood burner but like most things its only a dream. I gave up my plans when Hubby got ill but do my best with what I have got. Please dont get complacent about the future as the S has a way of HTF as I found. If you can build stocks, buy renters or do up a small holding do it now! Somedays you will feel as if you are pushing a rock up hill but if it means you have something to fall back on it worth it.
When the retirement plans fell apart I became determined to utilise the time I had being mainly housebound to re-use, re-cycle and generally get organised and after the DWP left us penniless for 3 months I dug my heels in deeper. The last debt is being busted this year, valuables that were sat here are being sold and I have a small nest egg buried at home. I will not be defeatedPantry is full and de-hydrated veggies are packed neatly.
BTW cannabis can be grown outside in a good summer its only people who want to keep a steady supply that use heat lamps to make a fake summer of long warm days. I only know as I was gifted some spent compost of very high quality and a seedling popped up a few days laterNot wanting to be wasteful I let it grow and my how it grew but the smell was awful. I thought it may be a rare chilli plant :rotfl:till Dds fella saw it, he literally fell about laughing.

Some forms of SHTF you can rely on happening and sometimes you even roughly know the timing - retirement, politicians making a mess of things, winter. Others can hit out of the blue with no warning at all, and just because one lot of brown stuff is hitting the fan, it doesn't mean that several others aren't about to....

Used to be several square yards growing in a local city park for 5 or 6 years that I'm aware of - may still be grown there, I no longer have friends in the area.
Hemp was cultivated in Eastern England from the 1500s and possibly earlier.0 -
