  • Morning everyone.

If anyone heard the news this morning there was a severe dog attack last night and it was not far away from me.

The lady has had "the top of her skull exposed" and a man has now been arrested.

I wish a speedy recovery to the lady.

I had a "nearly" SHTF moment this weekend. Went to a astronomy event yesterday evening and walking back to the car at the end I fell, smacking my head off the pavement/road. Resulted in a massive lump to my forehead, cut nose and lots of bruising (that is still developing).

Luckily somehow I managed to not break my glasses, but it made me realise how lost I'd have been for few days if my glasses had been smashed. I'm as blind as a bat without them!

Very sore today too, shoulders ache from the jolt and head throbs like a good 'un! May need to up my stash of paracetamol/ibuprofen!

As already said it's a good idea to get bumps to the head checked out even if it's just bruising. Hope you are feeling better today.

You get used to power cuts, the worst bit is no internet :D
We haven't got a windup radio and I think we should get one - is handy in snow and bad weather to hear what's going on, as the phones here don't work in powercuts.

I got a great deal on a twin set of cordless phones but we only use one so that the other is spare for when the battery gives up. We also have a corded phone so that we can still contact people or be contacted during a powercut. A few quid well spent as it has saved us additional stress several times.

The next job that I must, must, must prioritise is to get a back up car key. My spare has vanished. I will be in so much difficulty if I lose the remaining one. Back-up keys are easy to overlook.

Over the w/e we were going out and had a panic as we couldn't find the car keys. Hadn't been out of the house for 4 days and on returning last time we had a shopping delivery turn up and a friend and the car to unload and too much happening all at once. This meant our usual routine on returning home was messed up and totally disorganised. When OH looked for keys yesterday we had no idea or recollection of where he'd put them down. As we looked trying to hide our panic from one another my worse fear was that they had fallen in the waste bin that I'd emptied into the rubbish put out for collection on Friday:eek:. Luckily we have a spare set, but I wasn't sure of this until he produced them and then we thankfully found the main set:j It was a stressful 10 minutes and my mind was racing both trying to imagine where they could be and what we were going to do and how we would manage etc. Definitely made me think and realise the importance of having a spare set and knowing where to find them.

I was wondering recently if ,despite all the issues of post peak oil if this country may see a small recovery in the short term. I think I mentioned before that jobs that went abroad because of cheap wages and production costs are starting to come back. I think as the price of transporting goods climbs higher it will become more and more competitive to have local production.

If I had the cash we would be getting some land and looking at being self sufficient short term and moving into market gardening long term as it may just get a bit of a resurgence.

On the positive side as per zero hedge Mcd's have posted a 4th consecutive monthly fall in sales. So maybe the big companies will be the first to start falling as things worsen, leaving room for smaller local, and probably better quality and healthier produces to step in. Also in a world where food prices are higher surely the obesity issues will sort themselves out. I mean once it becomes seriously viable to save alot of cash growing your own veggies and avoiding processed products alot of peoples diets will improve greatly. So maybe its not all doom and gloom lol.

:D I had cause to instigate wonderment among acquaintances by producing the diddiest Swiss Army Knife from my handbag where it lives, with a few other bits, in a lipstick case. Well, when you need a little knife.... and they needed a knife. It's so cute that I bought two of them.

I have all manner of useful things and gadgets in my everyday never leave home without it backpack including a mini swiss army penknife and love the looks of delight as I produce just what is required in times of need. I have quite a reputation for always having the right thing in my bag, but often have sore shoulders or back if out for long. Thing is no matter how I try I can't seem to leave anything out to lighten the load.:o

I have done an couple of kits for each car this week: 2 x high vis vest / 2 x socks / 2 x pairs gloves. Need to add a wind up torch in to both cars and a first aid kit in to one (one already has it in). I added the fresh de-over sprays in to each car & checked ice scrapers were in. Must remember to add two big coats in when we go out too.

We have a couple of these, one each kept in the door pockets. Torch, seat belt cutter and window breaker. also has a magnetic bottom so can be placed on the side of the car as a warning and also flashes or can be used as an ordinary torch.

I've had cause to go hurtling off upcountry today (sadly - would rather have been in the garden) & have seen for myself that lots of floodwater is still lying in places that don't get news coverage. And more to the point, the roads are in just as bad a state as they were on that nightmare Christmas Eve journey to pick up DS1. Potholes you could lose a small car in, crumbling verges & edges, fallen signs. No sign of anyone having been out to mend them. We're talking about a major A road here, in the South, verging on regular commuter/Tory voter territory. It speaks volumes to me that there doesn't seem to be anything left in the kitty for repairs.

We rarely go out and as for leaving town that's only when hospital or family visits arise. The deterioration of the roads and standards of driving never ceases to shock us. It's really worrying not just because it reflects the state of the economy but also the fear of damage and repair costs to the car are on your mind. Some roads are not just potted and badly repaired but because of the land beneath more akin to a roller coaster. We've seen quite a few motorists bottom and scrape after over taking us in too much of a hurry, travelling too fast for the state of the road.

Eat your heart out if you are not on a Tour de France route! On the news they were saying Yorkshire has spent £4 million on repairing it's roads in preparation.

The downside in my locality is that they seem to be doing all the roads at once .

When I came to fit it, the suction cups closest to the corner, fall slap bang on the grout gaps.

:) This all sounds very good. Can I ask about footwear? We ladies are often out and about in impractical footwear but mens' dress shoes such as those worn with suits can be impractical, too, especially if needing to walk miles or go over rough country.

How about a pair of well broken-in hiking boots or a pair of sturdy trainers? Could be a major boon if you need to hike away from your car.

May I also suggest a head torch as well? They're brilliant because they leave your hands free and you can get on with other things. Imagine fiddling under the car bonnet with a torch in one hand (or between your teeth) and you get the picture.

Oh, and cheap fleece hats are great. You'll be cold if you're stranded in the car and cold if you have to hike out, even if it's otherwise a mild night. Good luck!

I have got a pair of wellies in my car but no practical shoes for my OH and neither of us has any practical in his car either. Wishing I had held on to my old walking boots now and not chairty shopped them
I will have a look in our local 99p store for fleece hats, as managed to pick up a pair of gloves at 99p and then saw them in the local Yeomens on sale at £5.00 a pair, hadn't thought of hat so thank you :)

Will keep my eyes peeled for head torch too.

Once we have prospect of snow I do get my snow shovel in too, but don't carry it around all the time as it has to go on the back seat.

Thanks for the extra ideas

Siegemode - thank you for the torch recommendation & other bits. I will have a look see where I can pick them up cheapist.

There are LED torches that can do a SOS morse code signal if necessary which eliminates the risk of making a mistake.
