PIC you shouldn't have given him your address.
I'm afraid, legally, you have no choice.paidinchickens wrote: »I thought by law you had to exchange details

It works both ways and he should have given you his address too. Also, even if he wants to avoid using insurance (as many people do nowadays) still get the details of his insurer. I didn't know that about reporting to your insurer within 24 hours - best check the small print I guess. It isn't compulsory to use insurance and if you can prove the accident was his fault (a witness would be a lot of help here) you could reclaim the damages via the small claims court if need be (it isn't small claims any more, they have renamed it but can't quite remember what). You could do this at any time so no issues about informing your insurer within 24 hours. A lot more hassle though so would need to be worth it. The problem I have with insurance now is that though I legally have to have it, if I had to use it my car is such an old banger they would write it off for a nominal sum. That would annoy me, old banger though it may be I know its oddities and what it's had done and expect to get another 30K miles from it at least0

ETA Bob, was that the lad who'd run up a big bill for it?
Are you thinking of the young boy who hanged himself, after he ran up several hundred pounds on his mother's Credit Card, playing online?
If so, the boy I'm talking about was his friend, who had killed himself a few weeks ago.0 -
Was it PiC who mentioned sowing peppers, amongst other things? You really need to sow peppers with heat (heated propagator perhaps?) and it's almost too late already. They need a long growing season and the UK isn't really suitable for them, even if you're going to keep them in a greenhouse, you need to get them started in early Spring with heat.
Lots of other stuff can sit around, although seed potatoes are in the shops now and starting to sprout, so you need to get them now and set them to 'chit'. Lots of other stuff can just relax, and big seeds like beans and peas can be accelerated into germination by soaking them for 48 hours (24 hours for peas) before sowing. With this trick I've had broad beans poking up through the soil in just 6 days.
When you need to get madly busy is when you can put your fingers into the top inch or so of soil and it feels warm, that's when you really need to bend your back and get cracking. At this time you'll also see tiny weedlings coming up thickly like cress on every centimeter of bare soil. That's optimum germination time.
Tomorrow, weather permitting, I shall walk up to the lottie gathering [STRIKE]rosebuds[/STRIKE] err pea-sticks along the way. Lots of things to do up there, probably including re-planting the onion sets I planted last week as at least some of them ususally get tugged up by birds who think they're edible in some way.
Must crack on and do something creative with leftoevers.
I don't have a heated propagator but still grow peppers and chilis from seed. I find one of those indoor unheated plastic window sill propagators to work fine. Although tbf the radiator underneath makes a big difference lol.

Worthwhile keeping an eye on it if you have mains gas.
It's not just properties with mains gas that are at risk.
A number of our power stations are gas fired, hence they would be unable to operate if the pipeline was turned off.
Given how narrow the margin is, between capacity and demand, it only needs the gas fired power stations to be shut down, for load shedding to become necessary.0 -
I saw a small heated propagator in Alldee today - think it was £14.99 Hth someone

PP I had a real old banger once, not worth anything at all really - in fact it had just been condemned at it's MOT and was insured 3rd party only. It got stolen from outside our house and DD1 saw it being driven away, got straight onto the police who actually found it whilst she was on the phone, the idiots had driven it into a ditch on the edge of a park a couple of streets away. Police recovered the car and took it away 'for evidence' and then charged me £300 to get it back:mad: Couldn't claim on insurance obviously, but totally an insurance scam IMHO - I was livid!
MaryB - that's why I got a woodburner too!
I'm having a go with saved spuds from last years crop. Will see how they go. I'm on a mission to try not to spend any money on the lottie this year (apart from rent obviously). All to be scavenged, swapped or use what I've already got. I have had some success with ordinary shop bought spuds in the past, but I know it is frowned upon:pOfficial DFW nerd - 282 'Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts'

The trouble with bank runs is that they are a self-fulfilling prophecy as if people think they can't get their money on demand, they're sure to try, and as we all know with fractional reserve banking, your money is a) their liability as you are their creditor and b) not even there in the first place.
I think that the government of the day will have problems with public order once the bail-ins are announced. While most forum users will have spread their money around there will be the problems that because our banks in particular have been so speculative with our money that the government might have to lower the threshold significantly. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
