Reading about the RM putting up stamps etc - I think we need to prep mainly against our own govt cos this lot seem hell bent on squeezing every last bloody penny out of us. Dropping further off the radar and opting out of everything possible is the way to go I think. I'm getting so angry at this lot.0

Depending on the damage, it may well be worth buying the "salvage" from the insurer and doing the repair work yourself.
I did this a few years ago when a car slid on ice into my parked car - the damage was a dented rear door. insurance valued the car at £1150, the salvage at £200 and sent me a cheque for £950. I replaced the door for £60 and the Ministry ID verification cost me £500 -

Good grief, again  just found the news info on the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-26385173
I agree with what you're saying, mardatha ... in fact, for the first time, I have a gut instinct about the wealth redistribution, that the rich are getting richer, and the poor getting poorer. I *knew* it, but I really get a *sense* of it now. All these "schemes" to help flood victims, subsidise wages, whatever - if a living wage was paid, people in work wouldn't need subsidies! There's a lot more to that rant, but I won't bother posting, take it as read.
Back to the stamps ... because of Martin's advice, I actually still have some stamps I bought at the time of that **humongous** increase - I'll be watching for discount purchases before 31 March now. And I've just noticed *what* the increases will be - they're pushing up the 2nd class price by proportionately much more than 2nd. Says it all.2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -

I think these stamp price increases are mad.
I could well afford any increase they imposed, but I will not be ripped off as a matter of principle. Since that last enormous one, I have done anything possible to avoid posting things. (Mainly using email and online bill payment.)
I'd say I'm now posting less than half of the items I was before the large rise. If everyone else has done the same, the Royal Mail will still be losing money.0 -
The problem with politicians is that it really doesn't matter which party they represent when in government or in opposition, I always have the distinct impression that their interests are first and foremost centered on their own gain and advancement, secondly focused on scoring points off the opposing party at the expense of any beneficial changes to the populace in general and thirdly relying on 'experts' who invariably have an agendas of their own to provide them with information on which to base their decisions about anything else. I don't think that the actual good of the people even gets a consideration any more, it's all about out performing the last government pre being elected to power and trying to come across as the 'good guys' whilst implementing their own policies whether or not they will be change for the better. Then 4 years later, the population is sick to the teeth of what's being done and re elects the opposition. No one is ever in power for long enough to actually see the results of their period in office come to fruition!!!0

I do the same especially when it comes to birthday and Christmas cards. I try and give them personally if possible. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
Same here. The problem for the government long term would be that with millions of people in them there will be very little retail activity as people will not have the space to store their purchase. Though with peak resources that may not be a bad thing.
A home like that wouldn't keep you safe from the public though!0 -
