BTW. I'd be very careful about using concrete to build a stove.
Concrete can explode (in much the same way as porous stones placed on a camp fire), showering the area with sharp fragments.
I read that most of the heat is transferred up the chimney and not the surrounding bricks because of the way it is vented.0 -
If anyone is thinking of going to sunnier climes, ie the Canaries to escape the SHTF scenario here, think again as storm Ulla is on the way there.

:T I like that flood barrier. Is that a cannon on the end to repel boarders or the business end of a pump?
I take it that this is a commercially made product? If it's homemade, it's very tidy and I've love to know how it works. Anyone got any ideas or linkies, please?
Hi GQ, it looks like a lock gate gate which is angled so that the pressure of the water keeps it closed. Usually there is a small sluice gate fitted at the bottom of the gate so that a small amount of water can be released at a time. Very clever.'Ear all, see all, say nowt;

Oh, is that the same sort of lock gate principle that is used on canals? And there is a small amount of water on the far side of it, too.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Yes, you are correct. This way they can control the amount of water being release so that it doesn't overwhelm the area.'Ear all, see all, say nowt;

Poor old poochie. How frightening for him.
On another subject, today I heard from EDF reminding me that my energy fix ends at the end of next month.
Unusually, they say that if I choose another supplier by then, I won't be charged a 'product change or termination fee.' (I had no idea there were such things, but am happy to set the ball rolling to avoid them.)
EDF also provided me with a personalised web link that gives the cost of their own tariffs. I always go for the longest reasonably priced fix I can find, so entered my details with Mr Meerkat.
The best fix there was nPower fixed till 31/12/17 at £1395 per year for my consumption. EDF's fix till 31/3/17 says it would be £1475 per year, so I signed up for nPower.
Closing my browser, and scrolling down, I noticed that the EDF figures are only for an average customer. Panicking a little, I then worked out that EDF would still have charged me £1439 for my consumption.
How silly of them to only quote an average customer figure.0 -
I don't know what time it is supposed to be for though? It looks like the chart was made this morning at 5am but unless I am going blind I can't see what time it the storm is supposed to occur.
It said +10hrs, so I thought either it was meant for 5am, when it was windy, or ten hours later at 3pm.0 -
Has anyone here any experience with the practicalities of going off grid?
I'm looking at houses at the moment, and the more I see the more I'd rather be able to either build a tiny house (not going to be allowed round here) or convert a van to live in.Not heavily in debt, but still trying to sort things out.

OMG! This is going to be a SHTF time!
This is a tweet from the dutch guy I posted about further up the thread, does this weather chart show what is coming on the 24th Feb for us, -30? Does anyone on here subscribe to Piers Corbyn forecasts? If you do, I know you can not tell us exactly what he has forecast as it isn't allowed but does it resemble this chart in any way?
