Our fence has been obliterated too, though at least it was an old one! We are going to replace it with open panels like a kind of sturdy trellis (I am sure it has a name but I don't know it), as they are fixed on top of a wall so no real threat to privacy. I have checked with my neighbour and she is fine with that. We will wait till the weather settles down before we do it though :(

Annoyingly, we seem to own the fences both sides, but at least we get to choose what we have, after talking to the neighbours of course. This will at least allow a bit more light into the garden, hopefully be a bit more wind resistant, and be easier to train plants along :) And I suppose there will be plenty of kindling wood once it dries out :p

We replaced our larchlap fence with a sturdy "open trellis" one. It has to be bolted into a low wall.
The first two panels blew down last night :( though I doubt anything could have withstood the winds we had here!
    Normal people worry me.

Neighbours and I lost fence panels on the boundary round our sewage system last night. And the roof where the sewage plant is.

We've agreed with GQ that fence panels are only good for kindling (and we have enough to last us a year or so...). The wooden structure under the fibreglass was rotten (I'm sure we can use that for fire wood too!). For the moment we've weighted down the plastic cover over the electrical bits with sandbags and are hoping...

We also discussed the fencing and have decided that we are going to get together and work out what we do with the area in the spring. There is an access road for the sewage system and our oil tanks between the two houses, but no one else really needs to use it. I have post and rail fencing at the back, and they hate their panels (they have a hornbeam hedge above them) and aren't that fussed about privacy (the other side of their garden is open to a field with a footpath through it).

So we're going to take down the fencing round the sewage system, clear the undergrowth and junk behind it and work out how to secure the sewage system and improve that part of both gardens. And they may take the rest of their fence down and live with nothing for a bit before they decide what to do about replacing it - if anything.

So hopefully this bit of bad luck will end up with both of us having nicer gardens!

Water levels are down slightly today (although they come up faster every time!), and it's not raining at this precise moment, so I may wander into the village to post a letter or two and pick up a newspaper before going back into hibernation!

Waiting for a carpet delivery and just praying that the driving rain doesn't turn into driving snow. It keeps on chucking bits of hail at us so it's trying. Meanwhile have been engaged in a big clean. Don't know if anyone else is like that. You're expecting work and a trail of destruction but still clean up in advance in case they might think you are grubby :D
Don't know if anyone has posted about it but we have yet another sinkhole!

Evacuating so many houses seems a bit OTT though. Maybe they think others might open up?
  • I have looked at them a few times over the years, BUT I know I will use it a few times, realise its a lot of 'faffing' around, and they take ages to dry out, and it will end up at the back of the shed lol... PLUS now that people got the internet, the sales of news papers have gone right down, and I have heard the glossy advertising leaflets that come through the door are no good

We have the log maker, but as you say it is a lot of faffing around. We use to soak the paper in large kitchen bins then do large batches but it got messy and then they do take a long time to dry. Luckily we had a utility room but you need dry weather. In the end we gave up. We now roll up magazines and junk mail into a tube and these burn about the same length of time without the mess.

Typical Police overreaction as usual. I think they just like throwing their weight around.

It's not a crime scene that needs protecting from traffic. Presumably all the homeowners are grown-ups who are capable of weighing up the risk of a big hole. All they need to do is stop anyone driving near it.

Well, the horrendous winds last night nearly 'got' my beloved horse ... he panicked and kicked out through the wooden stable wall, cutting his back leg quite badly; the vet has just been, and apparently he missed slicing through his suspensory ligament by a whisker. I still feel very, very shaky and tearful - and relieved, just so grateful. OH suggested I had a whisky, but I settled for a restorative mug of tea! My heart goes out to all people and animals suffering in this terrible weather - 'stuff' is replaceable, living beings are not. Stay safe xxx

  • I'm coming to the conclusion that our own government has less and less power and is now only good for standing around in wellies looking at floodwater :rotfl:
(thank you to whoever posted that link, can't remember who it was)

and that's when they can remember to put them on/take them etc lol

Picture 2 of 7 appears to show a giant lizard emerging from underneath the road...

I CBA to clean. I've been and bought a paper and intend to ignore the housework, flood preps, backlog of work and read it
