greenbee, hope you and yours stay safe and dry and escape the floods. Sounds like you've had an incredibly busy day of preps, hope you find time to relax a bit.

GQ, I hope you too are able to relax a little. I'm feeling really angry on your behalf. About 10 yrs back some barstewards forced the lock on our old ford and it really shook me up. The thing was it wouldn't have got them anywhere as it was soon to be collected for the breakers yard as the engine had seized. It was parked in a small residents carpark at the front and ever since I have insisted on our bedroom window being ajar every night. I barely slept for weeks and have been a light sleeper since. Its's not the fact that the scumbags have or haven't taken anything it's the fact that your personal space and security and piece of mind has been violated. That's what made me so furious and I have been overly protective and vigilant since. The lack of respect for others and their property these days is alarming and frightening. Frustrating too knowing that the likely reality is that they won't get caught or punished.

Well after a bit of a meltdown a few days back I have been chilling and remembering better times. Currently listening to a Pink Floyd concert on u toob recorded 6 August 1988. I was there the night before and although it's only a bootleg audio I'm transported back with the help of the crowd singing etc. Love it :D Both OH and I share the same love of music and tastes and although we didn't know each other until 2000's we have seen some of the same acts and like the same music. Last year we went to see Eric Clapton (guest appearance by Peter Kay), Roger Waters and the Stereophonics (guest appearance from Sir Tom Jones). We had,t been able to go to a gig for 10yrs due to health and finances. This year we've already booked Robert Cray, Jeff Beck and a few others. It's giving us something positive to focus on as well as quality time together. I feel so lucky to have gone to so many gigs and festivals in the past, especially when I hear the younger generations saying I wish I'd been there etc. As I type I'm being energised by the sound of PF playing through the stereo and the memory of an awesome concert at the old Wembley Stadium and a blistering hot day. I still listen to ACDC, Genesis, Rush and Simpleminds amongst others and remember some wonderful times. No matter what happens SHTF wise I will always have those memories to keep me going. As with last year we have decided that it's important to create more memories to keep us going through difficult times ahead.
Sorry to waffle a bit but I think it's so important to have such memories to keep you going during tuff times and to look back on should you lose someone close so it kinda comes under prepping.
Bonus is when I'm transported back through music I forget my age:D

On the subject of music, I am totally transfixed by Nashville on More4. (Thursday nights at 10pm)

You can download the songs you listened to in the programme:

although I buy the albums. Anyone else a Country fan?

edit: BTW, who would have thought Hayden Panettiere was such a great singer.
  • How about something like this, for the shed?

I enjoy some, but couldn't quote songs or artists. Mum was a big John Denver fan when I was growing up so I quite like his stuff and still have a few tapes. I'm more into rock, blues and anything with a good guitar. These days though as much as I look at those standing near the front with just a little envy, I'm quite grateful to be sitting in the disabled section with OH. Tis much more comfortable and civilised :)

Bob, is that something that will go bang if someone fiddles with a lock?

I think that was the point. ;)

It is a shame that people have to resort to such measures but these things might become more common as wages fall.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

    GQ - Scumbags!!

I keep my bike in the hallway, tis completely in the way, but I've had a fair few disappear from outside in the past, fortunately not anything I'd spent agreatdeal of money on, but t'aint the point is it? I like the idea of hooks to hang it aloft, may have to look into that...

Thanks sim and cheapskate for the linkies I have lots of prepping stuff pinned on pinterest. DDs prefer pictures of pretty homes and shoes, but mines full of prepping and self sufficiency stuff, lol.

After reading grandmas link yesterday and BBs today I'm not sure staying home will be the best option in SHTF situation, be it mobs of the hungry and desperate or our own government ( and I don't think it's only the American govt capable of such things) seems we could be sitting ducks:(.

At least I do live in a fairly rural area so I reckon things would happen more slowly in these parts, so there may be some warning... I know a lot of people think things will just slowly grind down rather than there be a big chaotic event and I do hope so. It does seem however that TPTB are almost goading people, as if they want a reaction so that police state/martial law can be justified, or they are so far along their own arrogance that they believe they can do whatever they like and no-one will really oppose them. They don't even seem to have the decency to at least be subtle these days:(

Funnily enough I was taught dry stone wall repair techniques at boarding school around 1981. I thought it was a completely pointless skill at the time, until, you guessed it, I happened to buy a house with a dry stone wall, and was pleased to be able to do my own repairs.

This week I have a fence to repair, as no doubt lots of you do also.

Gosh, when I was an under-10 (imagine the sepia-tinged image, prolly with dinosaurs nibbling tree-ferns behind the coal house) a kid's party was in their parent's living room or back yard, depending on the season. You had a cake your Mum or Nan made, jelly, sarnies and a few cakes, plus simple games like Pass the Parcel and Musical Chairs. No one had every kid in their class, it was usually no more than a dozen and everyone got hopped up on sugar and ran around like looney tunes for a couple of hours and no one had even heard of party bags, FGS.

This is how I have done every one of my kids' parties so far! I even have layers in my pass the parcel that don't have a prize in!

On a prepping note... hubby filled up the water carriers from the caravan and put them under the stairs, this was months ago so I reckon we need to get them out and change the water (we didn't treat the containers or the water)... what can I use the water for and should I treat the containers with something? We use them pretty fast while caravanning so it's never really been an issue.
