Christmas this year has been like the previous years - basic, nothing too different to normal eating/food buying, outdoor greenery and sourcing gifts for my girls as low as possible and nothing so much as a pile but a collection of well thought out pieces that can spark an interest/help them learn something new.

Finances have meant I have had to be canny for a number of years but I sit here tonight feeling at one with my 'stinginess'. Instead of feeling tight and like I've let my girls down (as previous years) I feel like I have a nice idea of what Christmas means for us as a family.

I'm concerned about the winds and rain forecast for the next few days as I'm working and drivin on roads I'm not yet confident of. I go where the sat nav directs me and not where my local knowledge can tell me to avoid. I've a few country back roads around and will be on the roads till around 9.30pm.

Looking forward to going fossil hunting on Boxing Day. The weather is supposed to be calmer without rain... supposed!

Heavy snow here for the last couple of hours, got some candles lit, Asda has graciously given me some nice posh subs, and I'm happy. Will put this off soon and settle down to a nice spooky scary book. magic ;)

Ooh, which spooky book is this? I'm always on the look out for books like that.:)

  • I've just wrapped a pile of presents, I've only bought a small gift for each family member & the children have pajamas as theirs, everything else has been home made or re-gifted.
Tomorrow hubby is working & I'll go out to get milk, veg & bread, everything else is sorted.
I just wish someone in the family liked whisky, hubby's been given a 2nd bottle this year & hasn't touched last years.

  • I have to travel tomorrow, picking DS1 up for Christmas in the early evening. He could come by train, but it's £45 each way, he has heavy, delicate & expensive kit to transport, and I have other errands up there and en route. I think I may go via the motorway rather than my usual back-road route; fewer trees, and although there'll be other drivers, some of them lunatics, there'll also be help closer if it's needed.

Would someone you know or work with swap it for something they don't want but you may?

My thoughts are with all of you who are preparing in case the weather interrupts your cooking plans.

I have often thought about what I would do if the oven went kaput.... I think I would have a complete, total, unmitigated and very technicolour meltdown.

My dad and I decided today that we'd cut the turkey up and cook it on the fire in the chestnut pan

Actually, we'd probably end up with dairylea sandwiches and chocolates :D

Thanks for the reminder about the weather. I haven't been tuning into the news and although we are not going to be in one of the harder hit zones it turns out that the Met Office site has warnings for very heavy rain and high winds tomorrow morning so DS2 and I have just crept outside and taken down the Rotaire by torchlight. The neighbours must have thought we were very strange burglars.:D

My total Christmas spend will be around £50 and most of that is for the Joint for Christmas day. Other than that I am pretty well prepared for the next few weeks. All I will need to do is get out for milk, as I have stocks of everything else.
