Funnily enough, I have gas central heating and storage heaters.

This house was very cold when I bought it in 2005 even with central heating. Even starting the heating at 6am, I was still shivering at 10am.

At the time British Gas were offering overnight electricity for less than the gas. I had some old storage heaters from various sources-I found one at the side of the road :) -so I decided to make use of them.

Now, since then of course the prices have changed. I am paying 4.862p per unit on night rate electricity, 16.296p for day rate electricity, and 3.556p per unit of gas, at least until my fix ends in March.

Now, you may ask why on earth is JK0 still bothering with E7?

Okay, well first of all, the conventional gas boiler here is only 80% efficient, so that puts the gas up to 4.445p.

Also, the gas boiler requires 1 unit of day rate electricity for every 30 units of gas, so that puts the gas up to 4.9882.

Thirdly, a gas boiler costs around £3000 to maintain & replace over 15 years. If it burns 20,000 units per year, that means that each unit burnt costs 1p in wear & tear on the boiler. That puts the gas up to 5.9882.

The storage heaters cost me zilch in wear & tear as they were free, so I mostly use the storage heaters, and top up in the evenings with the central heating.
  • what you lot drinking then ???? :rotfl:

Since you are in the chair, I'll have a pint of cider, thanks.

jk0, my Nan has an early 1950s council bungalow. Gas isn't an option as she is on the very edge of a village.

She uses electric storage heaters and the place keeps nicely, even for a 90 y.o. lady who doesn't move around much. She's certainly not huddling under a blanket in her chair.

And when the leccy went off for 26 hours in that bad storm in October, the place held on to it's heat. The big improvement which made it so much warmer in there was DG windows and doors.

Back when my parents had E 7 Mum used a timer switch to run the washer overnight on the cheaper leccy, is that something you do?

  • Check the vet isn't a pelican, or else you will get a huge bill.

Talk of bills reminds me of the time Donald Duck took his girlfriend to a hotel, for a romantic weekend away.

As they are getting ready for bed, he realises he's forgot to bring any condoms, so he nips down to the reception desk, and asks the night receptionist if he has any.

The night receptionist says "Yes sir, we have some condoms. Would you like me to put them on your bill?"

Donald replies "Certainly not. What sort of pervert do you think I am?"

Thats quite a good idea with, the storage heaters.

The back boilers work very efficently and more, than heats the house. Also, the tank stores the hot water and, stays hot all day.

When we first moved here took time for us,to remember we only had limited about of hot water. But now we are works out really well.
  • Been wet and windy here all day except first thing. Good day fro christmas prepping so that I dont get in a spin nearer the day, I have two xmas eve birthday , a boxing day one and one first week of Jan all immediate family!
I dont know who posted about tying a brick to the cats to stop them blowing away but it wouldnt work with my secondhand Cats Protection cat as I only have three quarters of a cat! He came tailless after a fight with a car when younger. I did ask when I paid the adoption fee whether I could get a discount as it wasnt a whole cat! LOL

Bedsit Bob I went for a nose to see how the farmer has it set up, he has the spring going directly into a pipe and then into the containers then on to the drinkers on down the line. I suppose if it got contaminated underground it would mean the whole lot was useless. I was thinking more of a shortage or cut off in supply. I suppose a nuclear war or dirty bomb would contaminate the ground water if it wasnt shut off in time.

Prepping today involved decanting my home made strawberry wine to bottles. I have had a swig and it is very strong, dryish but totally drinkable without an after taste shudder! I have put another wine kit on to brew as I found it in the cupboard, also ready for xmas. To go with HM fruit brandies, chilli & lemon vodkas, HM cassis and sloe vodka should be a good xmas!!
Had to put my ducks to bed this evening as they didnt want to go in , in the rain. Picked up the drake and he is a right little fatty and really heavy! He's lucky I managed to pick up two YS ducks in Al*I otherwise he may have been in my sights!! LOL

THinking ahead, like we all do, have we got any New Years Prepping or otherwise resolutions? I am having a good think as I want to be realistic in my goals takin ginto account health issues , family etc. It would be interesting to hear some of your resolutions.

Bedsit Bob not a cat related accident that would happen in my house, the benefits of 3/4s of a cat!
