We are getting weather alerts here in holland for tomorrow. And I remember the tales of 1953. I grew up in an area that was heavily affected.
Stay safe everyone. It will be new moon extra high tide tomorrow night.0 -

It will undoubtedly last you long enough to pay for itself and so is well worth the money but I think most people would have walked away having seen that kind of a price tag! Lyn xxx.
I also had my hair cut above Silly Billy's Toy Shop in Hebden Bridge - cost £3.50 but I usually push the boat out and give him a fiver. :rotfl: Then I went home and decorated my twigs with a celebratory glass of a Baileys imitation (£5 a bottle). Back to Mrs Frugal! (well sort of).0 -

Eeek. I read something somewhere that it's a combination of factors which cause the surge; low pressure in a certain place, wind in a certain quarter and moon in certain phase.............2,500 lives lost in the Netherlands and 300 in UK.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

This was our road in 1978 when a surge of some kind caused floods. We watched as the water came up to our front door - and stopped just at the top of the step. Our house is just off the picture on the left, about 3 doors up:eek: we lived about half a mile from the sea. I don't live there any more but dad still does. The following year it happened again. Then they built a sea wallI wanna be in the room where it happens0 -

Evening all. I hope everyone stays safe in the potential upcoming weather. Those pictures were amazing VJsmum!
We live near Sheerness and right by the Medway estuary. I have no worries for ourselves, but do worry about the houses and flats that have been built on land right up to the river. I have seen the area flood in the years gone by, I would never choose to live there myself.
I also have concerns about our power supply. As I mentioned a while back, twice during the night the power has gone off. Being a nightowl, I was able to counteract the lack of light and alarms. Lucky for us but not for others who would have lost their electric alarm clocks - I wonder how many overslept.
This evening, my youngest has come home from her friend's at the top of the road and mentioned that 3 houses in the middle of the street have no power again, with the inhabitants wandering around outside with torches. Now I know this road is powered by at least 2 substations, but it would seem that these three are on yet another!
I have wound the lantern and have candles and so on at the ready...just in case.Spam Reporter Extraordinaire

I grew up in South Essex, and my mum told me all about the 1953 floods, and which streets nearby were flooded. As a result of these floods, the defences were significantly improved, but as the pictures of Sheerness show, floods still can happen, if the conditions are right.
I wonder if the Thames Barrier will go up just as a precaution.
I live in north Kent now, but on higher ground, so we wouldn't suffer from river flooding. We had a worst case scenario intense local storm about 18 months ago. There were flash floods in nearby roads, but the topography and road design meant that the excess water was channelled away from our house. So I feel reasonably happy that we wouldn't be flooded at this property.Early retired - 18th December 2014

That was very interesting, thank you, VJsMum. Looking at that dark blue 2.5 m surge at the coast of the Netherlands/ Belgium. Gulp.
Never did like the seaside, meself.
I had a look at Provincial River, a modest little affair that I cross to and from work and it's nice and low. It's had a storied past for flooding but not for several generations but people have boated in the streets in this neighbourhood before now. River is 50m away across dead flat ground. I was watching it narrowly several years ago when it was very high with a full moon but it didn't come near to overtopping, thank goodness.
I am on the Environmental Agency alert system for flood alerts as river flooding is a moderate risk here, according to themselves, but if it did happen, it would be severe.............
Wyre, interesting about the very localised powercuts your neighbours are experiencing. Have known the power supply to be very strange in some streets, such as half a dozen houses on one cable and the rest on another.
We have our own substation serving Shoebox Towers but even then, we can have partial powercuts, such as the time SuperGran and that crowd on "the far side" were off and I knew nothing about it over here. She spoke to the engineers and a fuse had gone, a whopping great thing several inches long, nothing like you'd find inside a plug.
Never thought about the implication of losing an electic alarm clock but it's an important one. I have a travel alarm which is my everyday alarm as well, titchy battery number. Wee gem has circumnavigated the globe more than once and been knocked down onto the tiled floor several times and still works.
Here's hoping power stays on, water stays in the appropriate seas and watercourses and everyone has a good night's sleep.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
