Thought that i would share today's bargain with you, a solar powered/windup radio + torch and personal alarm for 50p from the charity shop. Seems in perfect working order, all works on a wind up charge, hoping to be able to solar charge it in the next couple of days if the weather picks up.
:T Awesome preptastic bargaineering, that woman. What make is the radio, if I can be nosey?

Well, I can be nosey, you don't have to co-operate, though.

((((vanoonoo)))) very sorry to hear that you cat has passed over. Deep commiserations. I still get a little emotional when I recall some well-beloved cats who are no longer with us.

Had a bit of a :wall::wall::wall: day at the orifice but it's all right now. Because I'm not there for a few hours. And it may well be better tomorrow, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Preps a bit slack as have been feeling totally pants for over a week due to the lurgy but I will get my mojo back any day now and then it'll be a case of look out known world.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

  • Please nose away, I'm always nosey! I have to say I'm ridiculously pleased with it, it's pink too! So also aesthetically pleasing (to me). It is a eurohike, originally from Blacks, as it also came with the instructions with all the details on. What is it they say about simple things and minds........:D

I live in a very suburban area, but we get quite a lot of power blips and surges and recently had a power cut in the middle of the night. That was great practice as it made me realise that i needed some prep stuff within easy reach upstairs as well as down, as these things do not always occur during waking hours! So this will live upstairs where it will also charge better as our front bedroom gets sun most of the day.

The lamp has finally gone out.

Was on when I nipped out, at about 3-45pm, and was out when I got back, about 4-30pm.

So, let's say it went out at 4pm, (and no Police Squad jokes please. :) )

That makes it 153 hours, on one set of batteries.

ETA. I don't recommend running them completely dead in one continues marathon run (especially not on £shop batteries) because, I've just opened the lamp, to find they have started to leak slightly.

I know you were only using the pound shop batteries to run a test Bob, but do you buy many of them?

I always buy Duracells, for the following reasons:

    1.) They don't leak.
2.) They seem to run for ages.
3.) They last about ten years in the drawer.

When I was 17, my A level Physics project was to test the capacity of various different types of batteries. In those days, it was SP2, HP2, and Duracells. I had trouble flattening the Duracell D battery in the time available!
  • I'm actually considering a couple of packs of Rechargeable batteries.

A stall on my local market sells some with a capacity of 2700mah.

If I also invested in a solar charger, I'd be completely self sufficient, lighting wise.

And, just to make the day perfect, my 20 minute trip turned into a 45 minute one, courtesy of a puncture, which, of course, had to occur while it was raining.

Vanoonoo, so sorry about your cat:grouphug:- it's so hard to make that final decision, but when an animal is suffering... been there, know how awful it feels.

Will fussy cat eat home-cooked food, as in raw food but boiled - not as ideal as raw food, but for prepping, it's more achievable that making your own dried cat food. (Though you could dehydrate mince very slowly in the oven to get crunchy mince?) Keeping fingers crossed that you find a solution!

I have given up using rechargeables apart from in my appliances that came with them. The problem is that they discharge themselves over a few months.

Another problem is 'memory effect'. (If you don't discharge them fully before recharging, they won't take on a full charge.)

Mind you, that looks like a smart charger Bob. Perhaps you might have a chance if you can leave your batteries in it on a sunny window ledge continually.
  • That looks like a useful gadget, BB, where did you find that? Wet and windy today, gave in and had the heating on for an hour. Managed the target of no heating until November, anyway. Have been watching the Great Energy Saving Challenge on the iplayer, very interesting. Trying to work out how to make the house less leaky, stop draughts and things, getting the kids to close the doors would be a good start :rotfl: I liked their heat exchange thingy, don't know that we'd have space for anything like that though :(
  • PP I watched that, and wondered how to do a draft/air tight test diy style.
    any Ideas?

  • jk0. I've had a browse and, according to the Bitbox Battery Showdown Website, Duracell wasn't the winner in their tests, either for outright performance, or Value For Money.

The overall winner, performance wise, was Energizer Ultimate Lithium.

On a Low Load Test (200mA), with a 0.8v cutoff, it scored 3312mAh, but costs a massive 34p/Ah.

On the same test, ie. Low Load (200mA), with a 0.8v cutoff, the Ikea alkaline scored a very respectable 2269mAh, at just 4p per Ah.

That makes the Ikea alkaline, the best of those tested, for VFM.

Of those we tend to see in £shops, Kodak Xtralife doesn't fair too badly, at 2106mAh, and 8p per Ah.

Daewoo Super Alkaline gives 2060mAh, and 8p per Ah.

Sony Alkaline gives 2080mAh, and 12p per Ah.

For anyone interested, here's the complete results list.
