Sorry to hear about your cat, Vanoonoo. It's a hard decision to have to take but our vet calls it "the final kindness" and part of me knows what he means. The rest of me just wants to howl "It's not FAIR!" though.

By the way, I'm struggling with the idea of pet food in a long-term SHTF situation. I don't count the chickens as pets, really, and here on the edge of farming country, with mills around too, I'm likely to be able to pick up grain for them relatively easily. The cockatiels might not do too well on it, though, but seeds from their food seem to sprout well & grow (in my pot plants) in the conservatory; whether they'd flower & go to seed in any quantity, I have no idea. I've been trying to wean the cats (3 surviving, have had up to 5, all rescued. Oh, plus one feral in the garage that we're feeding, who is trying to worm her way indoors) onto the raw food diet, as we do have butchers aplenty around here. Two of them, and the feral moggy, have no problems with it, but Senior Puss would evidently rather starve to death. I won't feed dry food; the younger cat has a urinary tract problem which only occurs when we give them biscuits, and the older two put on weight really fast with them.

Anyone got any ideas for acclimatising Senior Puss to something closer to a cat's natural, locally-available diet? She does mouse, but doesn't eat her catch. Raw food is also cheaper than tinned & we're close to a supplier.

    :) Morning all.

Fingers still a bit sore from archery practise last night but thoroughly enjoying it.

I sent the folks' the same pix of the internet cats which are deadringers for their own and they're laughing about how WT in particular has a twin. Dad's been reading up about Norwegian Forest Cats and some of what we had marked down as WT's eccentricities seem to be specific habits of this breed. Whodathunkit; she ain't daft at all, just mostly-predigree. And Burmese can be trained to fetch......oops, one of the two "fetches" things into the house when outside dining happens in the neighbourhood; sausages and pizza slices. Not to eat, just to leave around on the floor. We've never caught which one it is but it seems that it may well be The Q.

thriftwizard, trying to change cats' habitual diets is very difficult because, as you say, they sometimes seem to prefer to go hungry than compromise . If your older cat won't touch raw meat, would raw fish be a possible option? Or would you have a source, even if it met Milady's approval?

I've know cats eat the darndest of things when they think they've stolen them from their humans; cheese, fruit cake, crisps, sultanas to name but a few, but I think the allure is that they've nicked them from the table......

    Good luck with your endeavours.

  • I wouldn't worry about Senior Puss.

Cats will not starve, if they can avoid it.

If she stops getting fed by you, she'll find an alternative source, whether from someone else, local wildlife, or whatever.

vanoonoo very sorry about your cat. We are also in tricky situation with our senior moggy's thyroid, small fortune spent on blood tests and medication but no real improvement yet.

The best thing one of my cats has brought me home is a Sponge Bob Square Pants pen with bright yellow feathers at the top, I guess that is what attracted him to it :D. We never did find whose it was.

I regularly get mice from my cat, mostly the deceased kind but occasionally they like to bring live one's in for Mummy to catch  if I remove the one's that they leave me on the patio and they see me throw it away, they will sulk for hours!

Vanoonoo. So sorry to hear about your cat, they become a huge part of your family that are very sorely missed when they head off to Rainbow Bridge x

Vanoonoo sorry to hear about your cat. One of ours (Humphrey) was hit by a car last weekend, and the first we knew was when the vets rang to tell us that he'd been killed. They wouldn't have been able to do this if he hadn't been microchipped, so I would urge you all to consider it.
Not heavily in debt, but still trying to sort things out.

  • Thought that i would share today's bargain with you, a solar powered/windup radio + torch and personal alarm for 50p from the charity shop. Seems in perfect working order, all works on a wind up charge, hoping to be able to solar charge it in the next couple of days if the weather picks up.
