Just joking. Get your warped humour while you can, a fast car has just been dispatched from Cheltenham to fetch me away for re-programming.

  • Bedsit's been cheeky on the "Is your heating on" thread

    I'm not being cheeky.

You asked for a photo of me, sans shirt, so I posted one.

You knowledgeable lot should be able to answer this one. Hubby just asked if a 100% wool jumper would be expensive, would it be worth buying one or are they really hard to wash, why don't you see that many these days? I am passing the question on as I don't really know the answer, but I would guess that is would be a good investment, as long as I don't ruin it in the first wash!
I am thinking prepping should include clothes that will last and can be repaired, as so many of ours are cheap rubbish that I really struggle to sew when it breaks as it just disintigrates!

GQ - now I have seen that already and it was too scary for me the first time!

:) I think looking forward to longevity and repairability in clothing is very sensible. For example, what happens when a spark falls on a fleece top? Exactly - a melt hole and if you're going to be bushcrafting or simply using a fire at home, you will get sparked.

A pure wool jumper would best be handwashed and dried flat over a towel. Wool isn't any one thing, it's a variety of grades and can also come spun with other fibres. If the label says Pure New Wool, it will be wool on it's first use. If it just says Wool, it will probably be reworked salvaged wool.

The finer the wool, the lighter the garment, and the more expensive it will be. I have an undyed Shetland wool sweather which Mum made for me years ago in brown wool.

Wool isn't particularly hard to wash; a sink full of modest temp water, a suitable handwash liquid or powder, and simply press and squeeze the water in and out, rinse and rinse again. Never twist, squeeze the water out in a clean towel, and dry flat over another towel on an airer or one of those special drying meshes you can buy to sling over the bath.

Wool is a fabulous fibre, especially for a damp temperate climate like we have in the UK. You can darn it when it gets holey and even unravell handknits and re-make.

I think there are several reasons why you don't see many wool jumpers these days; cost (it's dearer than synthetics but you're not comparing like with like, itchiness (some people cannot bear wool), idleness (some folk only want stuff which can be hammered in the washing machine) and just people having more options now.

If you go jumble-saling and charity shopping, you might just drop your hands on a wool jumper; I have got mens' jumpers in both places. Why not see if you can source a second-hand one and road-test it with hubby for wearability and then washability? That way, if it doesn't work out, you haven't punted much money. HTH.
