Greyqueen, Have heard rumours about the IMF supertax, but only from 'alternative' sources. Nothing in the mainstream news or any of the trading and financial sites I visit.

:( I suspect that they would keep it schtumm until they were ready to implement it, should it happen. One mention which was hopeful for us here in the UK was "eurozone" which I think means those countries in the EU using the euro, which isn't us, and isn't a few others.

We live in very interesting times, and not in a good way.

Basically food stamps are to be stopped for the month of November. It looks like the US could erupt into anarchy if this happens

Finally got the surveyor coming next week for the multi fuel stove, £2,000 fitted smiley-vault-misc-075.gifdon't need building regs because the company we are using are on the council list of approved installers and it is all above board, defra certificated etc. The trouble is they can't fit it until after Christmas :( The showroom was packed so there are a lot of people who are fed up of being held hostage by the utility giants. Plus if the power goes out at least people will be able to keep warm. Anyhow the surveyor should be round next week to tell us if we need to install a new lintel and how deep we need to go out with the hearth.
This is the stove that we have chosen

Out of interest is that fitting in an existing chimney or through a wall with a metal new chimney. Just trying to get an idea of rough costs for one ourselves. I did wonder if we would get a discount on fitting if we had it done in say the middle of summer when things are quieter.

Spotted a quote somewhere (cnbc?) where one of those republican representive said as long as the interest was covered on federal debt there will be no default as "Other government obligations, like Social Security, can go unpaid if necessary, he argued".

Just shows what these politicians think-debt first, REAL lives, FOOD, people and children can wait .

  • Ali it is through an existing chimney, You have to have a liner fitted which costs £500, then fitting which is another £500 and because we are in a smokeless zone we have to have a Defra approved one which really adds to the cost that is £850 plus having a new lintel fitted, £30 for survey which we will get back if we go with the company, then the chimney has to be swept and a hearth built (DH can do that it is basically just heavy duty tiling) so that the doors have at least 6 inches past the opening of the doors (that is why we chose the double doors because it means less of the room being taken up with a hearth).
Hope this helps, but you may be better going to speak to someone at your local fireplace centre, we could have opted just to reopen the fire, but there wasn't a lot of difference in price and you get more heat from a stove than an open fire x

Reading the original letter from USDA it looks like they normally administrate some cards early, it mentions the 15th.

I think this is just a hold on the administrative side of things. Hold the payments until they are sure the system is up and running correctly.

That's how I read it, of course you don't get to see the original letter that this one is a response to, the originators of that letter may have requested payment be held until the system is re-booted and checked.

This would make sense as there is no point in sending payments to an account that is down due to technical problems.
