  • :hello:Hello Redbooties, I'm getting lots of ideas from this topic. I have a bit of a stash, but have never really made a menu, for a week or however long, it is a good idea to focus the plans, and maybe keep everything for the week in one place. I'm a bit concerned as I would probably let stuff get out of date.
  • REDBOOTIES if you don't like beans of any kind I wonder if perhaps you'd like what M&S sells, which is a small tin of cured chicken breast which is solid meat and could be cubed up to go in the sauce? They were on offer a couple of weeks ago at £3 for 2 tins and are a staple in my store cupboard, they also do some smoked turkey, danish ham and smoked ham. Chopped up they would give enough for 2 people in a sauce with rice or pasta and they usually have a good long best before date too, Cheers Lyn xxx.

(I hate any type of bean though and would have to pick them out of my bowl lol)

In a real SHTF situation, you eat whatever's available.

I can't abide cauliflower or sprouts, but if it was that or starve, I'd eat them.

For canned foods, dates are pretty much irrelevant.

    Undamaged, they'll keep for years/decades.
  • You know how I stress the need to keep in sharp/strong flavours (sauce, pepper, spices etc.), to tempt the jaded palette, caused by eating bland foods?

Well, Tesco are currently selling Everyday Value sweet and sour sauce, at just 26p for a 440g jar.

Listed at 79p, so less than 1/3rd of listed price.

I bought a tray of 6 jars at my local T-Express, and will nip out to the regular store later, to try to pick up another couple of trays.

    Re yesterday's challenge

    My seven meals would be

tinned ham, tinned spuds, tinned peas
tuna pasta - those with tin sweetcorn, tin condensed mushroom soup
fray bentos chicken pie with tinned spud and beans
mixed bean goulash - tins of kidney beans, butter beans and either baked beans or chick peas, tin toms, paprika with rice
soup mix rehydrated with stock cube added, tin toms, - thick soup with part baked bread (baked!:p)
risotto with rice, tins sweetcorn and peas, cashew nuts - flavoured with stock cube and lea and perrins (?)
corned beef hash - corned beef, tinned spud, maybe tomatoes, and ever present peas and sweetcorn

Lunches could be tinned soup, pot noodle, super noodles, beans or tinned spaghetti

    Deserts
tinned sponge pud - love those!
    tinned fruit
(both with custard, have the sponge pud on soup day)
rice pud with dollop of jam
various bisuity / bar - y things (kit kat, cereal bar etc)
    pancakes - using powdered milk

My problem is that I am not keen on tinned veg so peas and sweetcorn is all we will eat now (obviously we'd eat anything in a SHTF situation). We may get quite sick of them!
I wanna be in the room where it happens

Should I avoid dinted tins? What effect would a tin that has a dint in have on the contents?
  • Yes you should FUDDLE, dented tins can have damage to the seals on the lids and bottoms or even a small hole (pin sized) where the dent is. This has the potential to lead to botulism in the contents and other contaminations are possible too. I won't buy a dented tin even to use straight away and never to go into storage. Hope that helps, Cheers Lyn xxx.

Hope all the packing is going well pet, Lyn xxx.

Evening Lyn :) I don't think I've been so quiet for so long! xx

Ebaying again today, trying to raise more for the moving fund ;)

I had no idea about dinted tins! Ill look at all my stocks tomorrow. I'm not sure what botulism is but I know it's nasty.

And get them used to the idea beforehand if they have "issues" ;) about not spending 3 hours in the shower.

No worries around this for my DS and Teen Houseguest - have to force them into the shower:o they'd be fine if they didn't have to wash for weeks! Could chuck 'em in the sea if necessary tho;) Might be a bit chilly this time of year!

As I only go shopping once a month (I do top-up at the grocers and butchers and get milk delivered tho) I should be fine for at least a week. Have copious amounts of noodles, rice and pasta and also stored spuds so that's carbs sorted. I have beans of several varieties both tinned and dried. Tins of tuna, corned beef, hotdogs, mackerel, stew, tins of soup, jam, flour, UHT and milk powder, butter, cheese, tins of toms, tinned fruit, evaporated milk. In fact we often live out of the store cupboard last week of the month due to finances:o Water may be an issue though. I have about 25l for 3 of us, plus immersion tank and header.

Have been reading along with you, but often on phone so don't post much, but I do love this thread and the great ideas and points of interest that come up.
