  • Metherer, there's a Secret Compartment in my going-away bag which always contains a little pouch of handwipes & a tiny bottle of sanitizer, a little old mending kit comprising needles, thread, buttons & poppers, folding scissors & safety pins, nail clippers & an emory board, a small amount of British cash & Euros, & a credit-card sized multi-tool & torch. Means I can just throw a few clothes in & go, plus my passport (kept in a fireproof place) if needed. I did use the mending kit in France this year when my undergarments suffered a small structural failure.

Not up to BoB standards but worth having, all the same! I used to keep the case packed & ready to go when my father-in-law was seriously ill over in Spain, but now he's passed away I've scaled it down a bit. I can still be at the airport inside half an hour - it takes longer to get to the nearest station from here!

ETA - since France, I shall be adding a packet of tissues, which can double up as loo roll!

Just so long as you don't use them as the former, once you've already used them as the latter. :p
  • METHERER I've got a survival tin which lives in my rucksack along with a small medical /first aid kit/ my swiss army penknife/ a small sewing kit/ a bottle of hand gel and a pair of spare spectacles. I never leave home without it, even if I'm only going to Mr.Ts. I worked out a long time ago that it wasn't likely that I'd need it when I'm sitting in the safety and comfort of my own home. It goes everywhere with me, it even was in my handbag for my Daughters wedding and I had to provide several plasters, paracetamol and safety pins that day. It's not cumbersome and it makes me feel more confident and able to cope whatever life throws my way!!! Cheers Lyn xxx.
  • I always carry essentials for "just in case", and always always make sure I've the wherewithall to get home - whether enough petrol, a note of alternative routes, bus fare plus times or whatever.
  • bus fare plus times or whatever.

    The Times eh?

Is that to read, during the bus journey? :p

    Yeah, me too.

However, I had to walk home four miles in the snow in December 2009.

I was working on a BTL flat that is in a cul de sac at the bottom of a hill. While I was there it started to snow heavily, and I thought I'd better make for home. Unfortunately my car would not go up the hill, and I had to drive back to the flat, and park up.

Never mind, I thought, I can get the bus home, so set off for the bus stop. About six of us were waiting at the bus stop, and one of the crawling motorists kindly told us that the buses had been cancelled.

I set off to walk home, in the snow and ice, and no-one stopped to offer a lift. On the way I slipped and fell over, and cut my hand, but it was so cold I never noticed until I was home in the bath.

It took 90 minutes to get home, and the last half mile was the hardest, as the snow was getting deep by now.

Since then, I always keep cat litter and a shovel in the car in winter, and also wellingtons & gloves.
  • Was the BTL flat occupied?

If not, I'd have slept there.

It's an idea Bob, but there was no food or beds or bedding.
