I think someone mentioned that Blackout was similar to the Blair Witch Project in the way it was filmed. Imo this made it more realistic than a Hollywood blockbuster.. Yes you could pick holes in it but if it made a few more people think about preps, then it did its job. I didn't find it depressing - but it did give me a little more impetus! The scenario depicted is of course a lot less likely than any number of everyday disasters that could befall any of us. :( On the other hand, we are in the age of cyber warfare and imo an attack on the national grid is quite plausible.
Meanwhile my focus has been on the family dog who/which was vomiting yesterday. It could have just been one of those 'doggy things' but owing to her health/meds it could have been something a lot more serious. Today thankfully it looks like we are back up and running and I was relieved to see her barking at the delivery driver of the soap flakes! I got these from Wilkinsons online as I have fallen out of love with a previous supplier.
A very fetching black and cerise dog nappy also arrived in the post - for when she leaks a bit due to steroids. The things we do huh?
Back to preps - the aim this winter is to have a few months supply of everything I ordinarily use. So I made a list - which I keep adding to as I think of things. I divided it into sections - like 'Food', 'Household', 'Toiletries', 'Meds' etc and the font colour denotes whether it is stocked up, on order, or to get. The latter category is highlighted if I am actually running low. It's a very simple system and helps prioritise the shopping ;).
Finally to Syria. We still need to keep an eye on things imo. It ain't over till the fat lady sings - and I ain't sung yet! :D
  • Poor PUPPY PINEAPPLE glad she's better today and back to barking at delivery drivers. It seems to be easier for them to have off days as they get older doesn't it? Docky is a bit stiff in this rainy damp weather and not wanting to walk as far as he usually does in the afternoons and I've noticed him sleeping more of late but he is almost 10 so not a spring chicken any longer, Cheers Lyn xxx.

You're missing the point that this is an Additional source of pollution on top of all the other national and regional ones you experience.

But preppers aren't using gallons of the stuff, on a day by day basis.

In a major SHTF/EOTWAWKI situation, the last thing TPTB will be worried about, is the pollution from paraffin lamps.

Indeed, in a really major EOTWAWKI situation, pollution from other sources would be massively reduced.

Remember the effect of the grounding of the US Civil Aviation Fleet (following the WTC attacks) on the temperature.

And it's not just a few anecdotes.

Large numbers of my (and my parent's) generation were raised in homes that regularly used paraffin for heating (and in some cases lighting too), yet these generations are living long lives.

Mrs L my border collie is 13 and she has outstayed all the men in my life! She was off her food yesterday which was worrying as she is the sort of dog who will eat her own vomit given half a chance.
Anyhow fingers crossed we are back to normal...

Thats true Bob we only had one open fire in use at home when I was young and the rest of the house was unheated except when we were ill or it was bath night when the trusty little Valor Parraffin Stove was brought in to heat the relevant room. This really was the norm and everyone I knew lived more of less the same way. They're still going strong and some of thier parents are too well into thier 80s so I won't worry too much about the fumes, Cheers Lyn xxx. In fact we still have the stove and use it in the greenhouse in the frosty nights of winter!

PINEAPPLE doggies are bestest friends through thick and thin, more than most people I know even if they do have some insalubrious habits!!! If there's any singing to be done by fat ladies we'll be able to field a choir, count me in !!! Lyn xxx.

It doesn't even need a cyber attack, to knock out the National Grid.

Solar flares have the potential to do it.

Then there's plain old shortage of fuel for the power stations and, if that wasn't enough to worry about, there's industrial action and, as regards localised power outages, sever weather, and equipment failure.

Of course he's not a spring chicken.

    That's because he's a dog. :p

Im obviously still too fat as havent been too cold yet, got a jumper on and dug my slippers out but still not too bad. im torn between retocking and saving money so just doing what i can without spending nything, we did our shopping in Ald y last night instead of the big green one and saved £18 on our half week shop! havent been in there for over a year, but was suprised how cheap it still was. definitely be using them instead from now on, no matter how vigilant we are we always spend a fortune in the big 3!
does anyone have any tips on where to keep your bug out bag?
what does everyone have in theirs, I have had a son since i last did mine and i am now worrying i would need to carry him as well as my ruck sack if we had to go. any solutions?

I am a fan of slings and babycarriers ( even in non SHTF scenarios) and this blog post shows some ways to adapt every day items into a carrier for your baby http://beltwaybabywearers.blogspot.co.uk/2011/03/emergency-babywearing.html

And of course that can be adapted to carry children and even other adults as needed.
  • I'm not sure he actually knows he's a dog BOB, he really thinks he's a people, and higher up the pecking order than me!!!

If one worry is carbon monoxide, I can't stress highly enough - due to personal experience - to have at least one detector in your home. Make sure it records peak levels because frequent low levels, which despite not being enough to set off the alarm, can also have an adverse effect on health. ;)
