  • Aim for somewhere in between the two scenarios BBB, keep up with what is happening in the world and keep in a sensible amount of stores and equipment make sure you're skilled up in things you personally need to be able to do, have your plans made for the many things that could potentially disrupt normal routines and then get on with life as normal, keeping a weather ear open to everything. It's meant to be a reassurance this prepping business, not scare the heck out of you petal, Cheers Lyn xxx.

    The TV programme Blackout.

I'm finding it too heavy for me and really don't want to watch any more than the 15 minutes I have done. Will I learn anything more than I would do here/already have the mindset etc if I put myself through it?

    Hello Fuddle

It was kind of scary. And no, you don't have to watch it, you can learn as much here. For some reason I am thinking of the old 'Friends' episode where Joey wants to put the book in the freezer....'cos it was scary... ('Little Women').

  • FUDDLE don't watch it any more lovey, there is no point in scaring yourself half to death from watching actors on a TV programme. It's only someone elses imaginings anyway, not a real event and no one could possibly predict how the world would behave if the blackout event actually happens. You've got common sense, gritty determination, and courage already, you're well ahead of the game little one, delete the wretched thing and be comfy again, Love Lyn xxx.

I found it difficult to watch because of the way it was filmed - jerky cameras etc. I did watch it to the end but wasn't scared by it, after all it is only the writers take on events.

I am sure there is some basis to it, these things could happen in that way after all, but no-one really knows how it would pan out.

I found the end very dissatisfactory.
I wanna be in the room where it happens

  • I've lurked on this thread for ages, only occasionally popping my (tin-hatted) head above the parapet:o

However, I am pleased to report that I finally feel I can hold my (tin-hatted!) head high and come out of lurkdom.

The reason - I HAVE STARTED MY ARMAGEDDON STORECUPBOARD AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES KIT:T:j:T:j

    (Sorry to shout:o)

Just been to Tosspots and started quietly (couldn't spell surreptitiously?:o) buying tinned veg, fish, fruit and dried milk (just a few at a time - remembering Greyqueen's advice to keep my OPSEC!!) bottled water plus plasters/paracetemol/ST's/steri-strips.
And - ta-da - I got a small wind-up torch to keep in my handbag (which lives by my bed at night).

Can I play now please? Pretty please?

Air pollution isn't just a paraffin related matter.

Coal fired power stations add to the air pollution, which kills thousands every year in Ontario, and poorly maintained cars is a major cause of the pollution, that kills around 10,000 a year in Iran.

We had a paraffin heater when I was a child and, despite its regular winter use for around 20 years, both my parents lived past retirement age (my father by 20 years), with neither dying from a respiratory disease.

    .....

You're missing the point that this is an Additional source of pollution on top of all the other national and regional ones you experience.

And you choose to bring this source of incomplete hydrocarbon combustion into ones own home, a relatively confined, small volume of air that you breath in for long periods.

From that viewpoint seems like an unnecessary addition hazard to inhale, when there are perfectly serviceable modern replacement like solar/battery led lightning that people in the 3rd world are gladly taking up to replace this problematic old technology.

Regarding you childhood experience with paraffin, I don't think you can build meaningful health statistics out of a few anecdotes.
  • Hello LILLIBET glad you've dipped a toe into the prepping world, come and play it's always nice when friends from other threads find us and join in. You're very up market if you've got a real Tin Hat, the rest of us have to use our colanders cos we're not as trendy as you!!!!! of course that means we get wet heads when it rains, but frankly I'm not sure anyone would expect it to be otherwise with me!!! Welcome aboard, Cheers Lyn xxx.
