Gosh this thread certainly covers some topics!

I am envious of those filling their barns with logs for the winter. We could always rely on our open fires for heat, light and general comfort in our first house but our current abode relies on central heating. Some kind of grate or wood burner is high on the list for our next move which will probably be our last. That sounds a bit dramatic :rotfl: what I mean is that we are allowing ourselves to think where we might go when/if our teenagers leave home and when/if we can afford to retire. Neither scenario is imminent but it doesn't hurt to dream/plan.

My council takes Standing Order rent payments, that's a whole lot easier to manage than DD. I'm sorting out a big asda online shop today, and I keep sliding over onto Ravelry to drool over wool....must be winter coming :)
  • In the 99p shop today they were selling Batchelors Savoury Rice, Beef flavour, at 2 for 99p, they also had some packs of Knorr Soup cups, 8 ready loaded cups of tomato or chicken soup that only need boiling water adding at 99p a pack, both worth having in store. The rice would be a very good base for some tinned veg and meat to make a good hot meal in 15 ish minutes, each pack serves 2 people but with additions would serve more, Cheers Lyn xxx.

Discussions about health supplements and dangerous ingredients remind me of a health decision I took about a year ago:

That was to stop buying milk in plastic bottles. What's that you say? All milk comes in plastic bottles nowadays? Not if you order it from the milkman:

Yes, I know it's flaming expensive, but a search for Bisphenol on the web gave me the incentive to pay the extra.
  • We have had a few lovely days here. Today is very hot, but it has a little breeze too, which means I can cope with it. I have my washing out on the lines and will iron later. Don't know what to make for dinner tonight. Dh works night shifts so will not be wanting anything until much later tonight. Have been buying extra tins toilet rolls teabags all on offer. The food prices are ridiculous. I like the sound of the soup and rice prices in the shop of the 99p Lyn Thanks for that :)

  • I've made 6 litres of elderberry syrup. They are ripe or ripening all over my town, so much more to come! haha! Free for the picking. And packed with vitamins and antioxidants, the stuff is great for winter sniffles. So I'm stocking up. :D

I love to harvest free and wild stuff.

And tonight it's rabbit stew on the menu. With carrots (seems a bit like revenge to eat rabbit with carrots haha) and thyme dumplings.

This prepping stuff is not so bad after all huh? ;-)
  • Homesteadchick - WE have loads of elderberries ripening near here and I've been wondering if I could do any thing with them. Have you a recipe?

JK0 - now you've put me in a tizzy. I don't use much milk so buy the long life sort in plastic bottles as my arthritic hands struggle with the cartons. Can see am gonna have to have another think.

Is it really a good idea to stock things like savoury rice, dried soups & noodles etc? I don't normally buy such things as don't like them. I suppose in a SHTF situation they would be better than nothing - won't take up much space.

This week have bought more candles and lighters and a couple of handbag size torches so I can have one handy. Will have to save for bigger, more sturdy types.

I love reading all your ideas.

Basically you have 2 days a week where you "fast". Its not a full fast, but in fact a very low cal day, usually around 500-600 calories. Some people spread the cals over the day, which is fine for weight loss. But to get the other benefits of a fast (latest studies suggest it can protect against alzheimers, and type 2 diabetes). I used to fast all morning then have a small cup of soup or broth at lunch followed by the rest of my cals at my evening meal. But I find I am less hungry if I fast as long as possible, so I have nothing-accept of course drinks until the evening. I do sometimes have a tea with milk (no sugar) or a herbal tea which helps with hunger pangs or a little fruit juice in water to keep me going.

The weirdest thing your learn is about hunger and how it feels. I now know what I used to think of as being "really hungry" often was just habit or sugar cravings. The hunger doesn't grow over the day, but comes in waves that you can ignore-I go and find something to do and concentrate on. I found I rarely get those "I must have some chocolate now" type cravings any more. Or needing something sweet after every meal.

Its hard the first few fast days, but you adapt. Some people say they get tired on the fast days and I did get this a bit at first, but I try now to keep drinking through the fast and keep busy. Plus my meal I aim for a balanced, healthy, protein based meal.

The rest of the week I can eat what I want and I don't calorie count at all. But I find the 2 "feast" days after the "fasts" I don't feel as hungry at all anyway.

Works for me anyway, although I have to say it slipped a bit in the first few weeks of the summer hols-kids off and more temptations on fast days lol. But the good thing is I didn't put any weight on even though some fast days I was closer to 800 cals. Been better this last 2 fasts and the weight is creeping down again. Lost 2 stone over the first 9-10 weeks and now its about 1/2 pound to a pound a week. But I feel better and most vital to me is my weight isn't creeping up anymore.

Not for everyone, but I like it. There is a thread on here and there is a good forum on the 5:2 website and plenty of info on the net.
