This may have been mentioned (sorry - I've not been keeping up recently) but there's a programme on Channel 4 next week, Monday 9pm called Blackout - seems to be a drama going through what would happen if the lights go out.
Sorry if it's been mentioned & I missed it...but thought I'd mention just in case

Hi I am a size 16 as well I am only 5 ft 1 I would like to shift some weight a stone would be great, and I have health problems so cannot walk the way I used to which I always loved to do. After 6 children I am never going to have a washboard stomach but I don't fret over my weight. My dh loves me just the way I am he tells me. I have learned to dress for my shape and would never spend money I don't have to get skinny. I was never skinny and my Mother and sister used to love telling me "You are the size of a house" and this was when I was 8 and a half stone. Nasty comments a lot of the time which I used to take from them. They were always dieting and swopped clothes at times as they were both "petite" I don't see them any more for sanity's sake and my life has been happier for it. Think toxic family and you will get a glimpse of what I mean.

My family were and still are exactly the same, I have had terrible issues with self esteem all my life because of it. I avoid seeing them unless it is a wedding or some such thing.

As much as the conspiracy theorist in me kind of wants that to be true, it is just too badly written/edited... the emails don't read right.
Comments are interesting though, even if I only understood half of them.

Ordered myself a hurricane lamp (decent German one) and a knife (Opinel) last night. Still need a torch, the Lenser ones are even more pricey than Maglight though...

  • I think we're singularly lucky in that we're a very small family, He Who Knows is an only child, my lovely sister in law is an only child and I only have the one brother. We have 3 children between us and get along very well with each other and the various offsprings. They live 250 yards from us and we see them once a week most weeks and SIL and I pop out to the cinema or somesuch once in a while. I cut all ties with the rest of the family and so did my brother and we've been so very much more settled since then. No interference, no nastiness, no guilt just the seven of us rubbing along in harmony, it's a much better life. The only thing I slightly regret is that the children don't know the wider family at all, in fact I'm fairly sure the wider family don't know of thier existence but I'm sure that having no angst and discord has been a better life experience for them, certainly they are perfectly happy with things as they are, difficult decision cutting ties, but it worked well for us, Cheers Lyn xxx.

I didn't read ZH this morning as was in a bit of a hurry to get to work.

Just given a fast pass over that linked article now.

I'm not competant enough in IT to know whether its a hack or a psuedo hack. I agree that the phraseology is naff but having seen written communications from people who teach English for a living, I have been astonished at the level of incompetance among professionals, even ones who teach at degree level. My personal favourite bug bear is draw when they mean drawer.

My stance on much of what is called "news", even news from ordinarily reputable sources, is that it's speculation. I used to recieve cast-off Observers and Guardians, which might be anything from a week to ten days old when I got them. I got rolling news from the radio but wanted to read in more depth.

What struck me, time after time, was that a few days' seasoning had revealed even quality journalism to be mostly ill-informed speculation which was revealed to be wholly or substantively wrong by a few more days' worth of developments.

I think I might be able to get a handle on what is happening in Syria in 2013 in about 2043, when the dust has settled and some quality historians have been on the case for decades.

For now, my attitude is this; it benefits certain countries for there to be war in Syria. Said Middle Eastern countries are fabulously wealthy. There have been mercenaries around since the beginning of time. Let them hire mercenaries on the open market and get on with it, and leave the national armies of countries like the UK alone.

:D If you see a politician warmongering, offer to buy him a rifle and a pair of boots and put him down in the middle of it. If he won't lead from the front, he's a diabolical coward who wants other people's relatives to bleed and die for his political gain.

BB, I've seen those, are they worth the extra cash considering you can get a cheap hurricane lantern from a camping shop for under a fiver?
ragz, Opinel knives are really useful, just be aware (I'm sure you are) that the metal ring that twists round makes it a lock knife which is not legal to carry in the Uk without "good reason". Thinking about it, if you are looking for a torch and cash is tight (isn't it always), I bet there are thousands of Maglites or similar lying unused because they have been replaced by a newer sexier LED version - maybe a "wanted" post on Freecycle or similar is worth a shot? Depends what you want it for really, if you want a torch to see around the house in the dark nearly anything will do, if you want a torch to see the far side of a field 400 yards away or to keep by your front door in place of a baseball bat Maglites are still fantastic IMO.
  • Also don't forget that a large Maglite torch can be carried legally and make super dooper weapon, as recommended by Jack Reacher!
Hubby was advised to carry one when he was working in overnight security, he still uses one now, though he's only ever used them as torches.
