  • :D at all this talk of Dutch Ovens.
  • Thanks BBB you are right, regarding WSHF and it is only after S has been blown away from F and you have wiped it off your face, you have time to think and realise what happened! and how it could have been worse

Starting slowly to plan and consolidate things, its a good time of year - have more jam and stores to lay in, and prepping for winter to complete. This year I intend to take unwanted woollies to cs before it gets cold - they may be useful to others.

I did stock up my First Aid kit earlier this year - thanks to BedSitBob's advice (thank you) - and ended up using the burn lotion for itchy/sore shingles - it was the most effective thing I tried.

Have had a homely afternoon, ironing and watching a cowboy film - I love the old Wild West, and get lots of prepping inspiration. Today's bright thought, seen it suggested here before, was that the goodie often succeeds because he is the silent stranger type - he does not tell everyone his business/skills/background, but quietly observes the situation at the outset before acting.
  • It's these folks - never used them before but appear to be good value

But am totally confused about GreyQueens comments about mass public revolt, could you please elaborate?
:) Good to have you aboard, kiwiblue. I've been to your part of the North Island before; are you above Auckland? Nice climate.

The reference was to seeing off the NZ telly license a few years ago, not mass civil unrest, just to clarify.

:o OK, I'm prepared to make a fool of myself by asking; what is so risque about dutch ovens? Apart from cookware, I know of no other and haven't led that sheltered a life. :rotfl:

((((Perplexed Pineapple))))) owwww! Glad the car took the brunt of it, not you. (((((Hester))))) OMG, you have been in the wars. Sending you both all good wishes for a swift recovery.

I think charging patients and visitors to park at hospitals is diabolical. You're not there for fun, you have to be there and they have you as captive market. When my parents rushed me into the hospital after I had a mini stroke, Dad dropped Mum and me at the entrance to A & E and went off to find a space in a strange car park. Or rather, a series of interlinked strange carparks at a humungous site. Long story short, he ended up in a staff section and tried to exit it and got the car clunked by a descending barrier. Totalled the windscreen.

Didn't add much to the day, frankly.:(

I've been playing in the dirt on my lottie. Perfect gardening weather; hot sun and cool breeze. I feel energised by the sun but am a tired little bunny. Had fat hen come up like cress on the potato-patch-as-was, so showed it the business end of the hoe with extreme prejudice. Dad jokes that he could shave with that hoe; every time he comes up I check it hasn't left with him in the car. That was a £1 bootsale find I was very pleased with.

Will do more of the same tomorrow.

Am reading the second of the three books I got out about Hurricane Katrina, written by a local news editor. OMG, edge of the seat stuff. I knew New Orleans was low-lying but I hadn't grasped that the city is effectively in a saucer with only the levees keeping the water out. All water inside the city; rainwater, household water, sewage, has to be pumped up and out. When the storm suege drove the waters over, they literally had no way of draining back out again.

I don't think I like the idea of sitting in a tanked area on a coast prone to hurricanes............

Right, time for a cuppa, a bit of interwebulating and an early night as I'm cream-crackered.

    Shall I tell her?

Okay, the urban dictionary definition is "the act of trapping a persons head under bed covers after releasing vile a$$ fumes"

  • Thanks for all the good wishes everyone, I'm pretty sore all over but actually I think both I and the other party were lucky to walk away with nothing more serious so thanking my blessings. Hester I'm sorry to hear you've had rough time, it really highlights the importance of having back-up and contingency plans for different scenarios. I'm beginning to suspect it will be a good few days before I'm up to going out on my pushbike (currently the most advanced form of transport in the house) but I know that we have enough food and necessities on hand for that not to be a problem. Fortunately I don;t think it will be a problem taking a few days off work and I'll probably need to.
I discovered while exploring the wreckage that I had a suprising amount of emergency kit in the car - first aid kit, blankets, torches, a bit of rope, gaffer tape for repairs, the usual emergency car things like jump leads and high-viz jacket. Obviously some subliminal prepping going on, I'd forgotten half of is was in there :rotfl:Anyway I shall use the enforced domestic confinement to redeploy it and work on my BOB (not that I could carry it at the moment, seatbelts aren't kind to your shoulders I've found).
  • Perplexed:eek::eek: I am so glad that you walked away from the crash even though you are a bit battered and bruised (((Hugs)))
Hester I hope that you are feeling better, you have had a really rough summer, I just hope that when you get back to work that they appreciate what you actually do x
Welcome kiwiblue :hello:always nice to have a fellow prepper join us
I got an email about a shtf scenario week and I have signed up for it, basically you are given a set of instructions to follow everyday, a different one for each day of the week and you have cope, it is supposed to show where your gaps are in your prepping, even DH is game.

PP and Grey Queen we are in northern Horowhenua so have all the benefits of living on a smallholding plus access to fishing, shellfish gathering etc. From our land we look onto the Tararua Ranges which today have what is probably the last light covering of snow for the year. Climate is mild temperate, so can grow vegetables all year round.

Thanks forenlightening me about the "mass revolt" Grey Queen it certainly is great not to have to worrry about a TV license. I guess the powers the be decided it was just too hard to figure out who was daring to watch TV without a license.

Thanks for the link Butterfly Brain looks really interesting
  • PP and Hester sorry to hear about your troubles - Hester wanted to say also that I miss your blog.

Ok, didn't realise my talking about dutch ovens was risque in anyway, and now GQ has asked and you've explained I STILL don't understand? someone gonnae explain?

for the record, my dutch oven is a cast iron casserole dish that makes lovely stews, roasts etc, which sits in my fireplace? How does that relate to a fart joke???? I know, I live a very sheltered life up here :rotfl: I asked my guys and they haven't heard that either, but maybe that's because for us its like making jokes about the kettle???? an everyday object??
