Perplexed and Hester - sounds like you've both been in the wars. Hope you're both back to full fitness soon x
Not heavily in debt, but still trying to sort things out.
    Baby due July 2018.
  • pineapple, I think wear and tear. My stove is in 24/7, and this piece of glass has been in for about 4 years, so good going really. It cracked horizontally.

I found a place in Aberdeen to purchase one, £21 including P & P so pleased with that! Considerably less that the £50 I was looking at in lots of places earlier today.

Hi,could you please let me know which shop you are buying it from,we need a new piece of glass and live near aberdeen, thanks

Oh gosh, PP, hope your aches & pains pass swiftly & that the insurers play ball nicely. HUH, hope you are well on the mend now, and thank you for the warning; a long time ago I was rushed into hospital with one of the kids & that too cost a fortune - new nightwear for both of us, canteen food for me as I wasn't the patient so didn't get fed, train fare for my mother to come up & look after older child, loss of overtime for OH, readymade meals for those at home, etc. etc. You've give me a very much needed jolt as a couple of very minor disasters arriving just at the moment I'd booked a holiday have meant that my financial reserves have dwindled right down; I need to build them up urgently because you never know when you'll need them.

  • Hester, sorry to hear you have been poorly hope you are fully recovered now.
It is so true that hospitalisation is expensive. OH had a few stays and clinic appointments earlier this year, and the cost of all the travel and parking certainly adds up. I think some hospitals make allowances if you have to stay for a long time, but they didn't apply to us. And the time I spent driving backwards and forwards at visiting times which often ended at rush-hour - I'm retired, but anyone with a young family, and/or a job would be well stressed. Certainly problems for oldies and families with long-term health problems. Emergency fund badly hit.
Also reminds me to keep car topped up - it is low at present due to end of month. Last time I let it get low, I had to rush to A&E after cutting my hand in washing up bowl, 32 miles in total, so had to fill up on the way with bleeding hand (excuse me!) wrapped in tea towel.
  • PP such a nasty thing to happen, and damage to car as well. Hope you can take it easy for a few days, never mind rushing around on your bike.

PP take care and feel well soon. Hope the car is sorted fast.

Hester, hope you are well again, being poorly adds so many problems to everyday life doesnt it? When the SHTF it certainly bu**ers everything up.

We have 3 hospital appointments in September but am an old hand now, picnic foods in stock, change for car parks and books from the CS in a bag ready. Just the consequences of the results I can't plan for, stiff upper lip and shoulder for Oh need building up.

PP and Hester, hope you are both feeling better ASAP and GK hope your results are exactly what you are hoping for.

That's the one thing we can't buy, our health. I mean you can try to keep as fit as possible (but who has the time lol), but sometimes there is just a bolt out of the blue.

I still remember having a 12 yr old, an 8 yr old, a 2 yr old and a 2 week old baby and OH colasping and being rushed to hospital in an ambulance. I had barely recovered from getting out of hospital myself lol.

All those extra things to think about/pay for. Something to think about is that hospitals run schemes where some categories of illness mean you get a free parking pass, its not always just those in wheelchairs or on DLA either. This meant if my Dad or the in laws were free to give me a lift with them to the hospital we got free parking.

Would I sound sad if I even said I sometimes parked several streets away and walked up to save the parking when going for maternity appointments?

  • Can I re-join you preppers, please? Have had a bit of a traumatic summer, poorliness not helping, with shingles and what looks like long-term digestive problems, and lost little doggy to old age, but determined to keep on top of problems, and love reading your opinions/hints/adventures.

Recognise ICP in myself, Mardatha I always wondered why I am like this i.e., but also  and  at times. Need to stop worrying about being so round, and start enjoying having curly hair.

Looking forward to kids going back to school, from a grans point of view, this is when we will have a few nice days out, if weather holds, so I can test out my new [STRIKE]sneaky prepping[/STRIKE] picnic gear.

I see Margaret suggesting kelp - can I ask what kind and how much, I need to do something about energy levels, cant wake up in the mornings, and it will get worse with longer nights.
    Hello again SL

Sorry to hear what you have been going through. We all have personal SHTF times; looks like you have been having yours with a vengeance. It only helps to remind us all how handy prepping is - every cloud and all that.

The best thing is reserves of food and a little cash, it's amazing what a relief that can be if you are either rushing around stressed, or, at home poorly and can't do what you'd like.

But equally, don't get anxious if stores are running low after a SHTF event. You can only do what you can do, and doing it slowly is better in terms of staggering use by dates of your stuff.

    Take care

  • Welcome new people and returnees. Kiwiblue where roughly in the North Island are you? I know parts of it quite well. I've pressed the spam button on daveitiblu's post. I've had a minor SHTF moment this morning with a car accident - I'm a bit bumped and bruised but the car is a write-off. Could have been a lot worse, just a reminder that things happen and often beyond our control. We'll see what the insurers say but I'm sure they will write it off and we'll have to see what cash they offer us. Carless for a few days at least and possibly a week or more so an opportunity to practice for petrol crises by cycling to work. Not cycling today though, too sore :(
    Hello PP

Thank goodness you are ok. I have seen the aftermath of a relative who was in a bad car accident. They survived, but, so many injuries, never the same person as they were before it.

Cars are replaceable. Take good care of yourself and don't rush back into work if you can avoid it.
