Just been in the 99p Store again.

Found Butter Beans @ 3 tins for 99p.

Ye Olde Ham 300g tins (BBE is August 2015, so ideal for the long term store cupboard).

    A combined whistle/torch/compass/keyring.

OK, so the compass isn't up to much, but the whistle is loud and the LED torch is both bright and blue, the blue being useful as it doesn't impinge on night vision, as much as white does.

I'm considering getting one for my survival tin, and maybe a couple for my BOB.

Also, just noticed on their website, this.

A couple of these (and a pack of batteries) would be handy, in the event of a power cut.

It's for backup Pineapple - you cant always get/keep fresh veg and at least this way you'd have a plate of hot soup inside you. Plus it doesn't take up much room.

What about the tiny he1nz packets of concentrate soup to add to hot water? They won't be as cheap as packet soups and still full of preservatives but might be welcome to RV if he doesn't appreciate pasta soups.

    :T Here, here.

Can remember being v. poor in freezing Scottish bedsit and making hot drinks with chunks off an Oxo cube to give me the warming effects of a broth. It does help.

I've read the ingredients before buying the simmer soups (I've opted for the vegetable ones). Nothing too nasty IMO; no artificial colours, flavours or hydrogenated fats. It's got noodles, powdered veggies (listed) sugar, yeast extract, potato powder, dried garlic and herbs, pepper, veg oil, and maltodextrin.

Anyroad, older people shouldn't eat organic; we need all the preservatives we can get........:rotfl:

I'm re-reading Orlov's Reinventing Collapse before it goes back to the library. Bliddy good stuff.

I was also giving some consideration to how when we replace things now, we could be looking at choosing longer lasting versions. For example, a steel linen line will last many years while plastic covered nylon ones stretch and eventually give out. If you buy an all wood and bristle scrubbing brush or broom, when it dies the death, you have some useful burnables, not ghastly plastic trash for the landfill.

I collect red willow storage baskets. Because I like them. A quid or two here and there second hand. They'll last for decades and then can be returned to the environment via fire or rot. Unlike plastic storage crates, which are brittle and seem to be like an excellent way of wasting your money.

Can other people think of things that they do to get longer lasting possessions?

:p Nope. A whole Oxo cube in a mug of hot water is overkill. Try it yourself if you don't believe me. I'd get three or four mugs off a single cube.

    I wuz poor.

Have you guys seen this report about Fukushima?

I think that certainly for the Japanese people, the S is now a lot closer to the F.
  • GQ, great topic.

I try to opt for glass jars rather than plastic if I can, and given the option i prefer the molded paper kind of egg cartons as well--they're good as seed trays and take less time to biodegrade than the plastic ones.

I collect baskets, in CS, and sometimes on the side of the road. We have our fair share of plastic containers, but again, sometimes I don't have the option.

We had a party awhile ago and spent the grand sum of an extra pound on cutlery in the pound shop. We ended up with metal rather than disposable plastic.
  • GQ I don't know that we deliberately look for things with multi uses but I sure as hell don't throw anything away that can be used again in some form or another. I'm another one that will opt for glass jars rather than plastic and they get used and reused for jams, pickles, preserves and storage. I keep yoghurt cartons for seedlings, and anything that has a clip on lid gets used in the fridge for leftovrs until it is too old or damaged, then it's recycled. I hope it doesn't go against OS principles but I think that saving up that bit extra and buying the best you can afford in natural materials, like real leather or cotton gives you something that lasts longer, and in the case of cotton or wool ends up in the rag bag and gets used to death for all manner of things. I try to mend rather than replace and if it can't be mended, try to find an alternative use for it even if that's only fueling the woodstove, Cheers Lyn xxx.
