Dear god. Syrup in porridge.:eek::eek: WATER & SALT ladies!!
Syrup?! Who's using syrup, I just have water with my porridge oats.
Being driven spare right now with a cat outside yowling incessantly. Being going on for hours. Pee-pul, neuter her, this is getting old very quickly.
Bob, I haven't had proper chips in years. Think its because they aren't cooked in animal fat any more, they just don't taste as good cooked in oil.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I always cook mine in vegetable oil.
I think the secret to my chips is twofold.
Firstly, I cut them thick, as in a good 1/2" square.
Secondly, I part cook them in the microwave, before putting them in to fry.
The part cooking means I don't have to burn them on the outside, to cook them on the inside.
They come out a lovely golden brown on the outside, and nice and soft on the inside.
And I don't use a chip pan. I've got one of these.0 -

I always cook mine twice but in a deep pan, never thought of giving them the first cook in the microwave - great idea:AA/give up smoking (done)0

As you cut them (nice and thick mind
), put them in a glass mixing bowl.
Rinse (to wash away excess starch, which would cause them to stick together) and drain them.
Cover with a plate, and microwave for 5-10 minutes (depending on how full the bowl is), stirring once to ensure even cooking.
Tip out onto a tea towel and pat dry, then straight into the oil (at 180c), for about 3.5 minutes, until golden brown.
Hey Presto, perfect chips. :cool:0 -
