Dear god. Syrup in porridge.:eek::eek: WATER & SALT ladies!! :D

no no no, half water, half milk and a pinch of salt (otherwise it's horribly bland) then afters a smidge of butter melted in and no extra milk (i don't get that, it seems so weird to me to drown hot cereal in cold milk)

but then i prefer a savoury porridge and often add cheese and spices to mine vs sweet with fruit and sugar like many do

now if only i could find a way to stop it giving me horrible heartburn, used to eat it regularly but the last few years no matter what i do with it it gives me horrible heartburn requiring enough rennies to calm it that it's no longer cost effective

Yep, porridge causes heartburn. Mine is water salt and single cream on top, but I have to sit upright and still for 3 hours after it!

 Porridge causes heartburn? Why wasn't I sent the memo? Currently OK, but if it starts, I shall know where the fault lies.

Mrs LW, great good sense, as usual. I occasionally get accused by my managers of having a good work-life balance. When I'm working, I'm full-on and then I walk out the door and I'm back to my simple-minded pleasures.

Today I have gardened hard and got very sweaty and dusty. Then I came home and bathed and washed my hair. Feeling lovely and fresh and stripped the bed and will sleep like a babe in lovely fresh sheets. Does it get any better?

Having been smacked upside the head a few times by this thing called Life, I've come to certain conclusions; a lot of the stuff we fret and toil for is clutter, dross, flim-flam and nonsense.

Stuff that matters? Talking to my family, time with friends, petting a cat, admiring the foxgloves, laughing at the antics of the birds as I feel the sun on my face. The smell of earth after rain, the sound of the sea on the shore.

I've only once experienced ennui, when on holiday. I'd got up at silly o'clock to fulfil an ambition to ride in a hot air balloon. Was wonderful but we were back at our accomodation at 08.30 am. What do you do after a start so awesome? Faddle around experiencing ennui, I've found. It passed.

I reckon big exciting things need to be spread out to be savoured, otherwise you get to take them for granted and don't savour the wonder of them. Must be hell being rich enough to do what you want, whenever you want it. No wonder so many people with serious money are so wretched.

:D I redug the potato patch. Found 2 kg of strays which Dad missed last Sunday. Sod's Law caused me to stick the tines of the fork into the only decent-sized ones, of course.

I have a decision to make; pranged red potato or pranged white potato with my tea? Hmmmmm............

  • GQ I don't know many seriously rich people but have you ever come across one who was happy? I certainly haven't they all have so much materially and nice clothes and nice cars but they all have that restlessness that comes with boredom and discontent and seem to spend all their time and effort on holidays and cruises to alleviate the day to day boredom of living their lifestyle. Not for me I'm glad to say, give me my patch, my second hand books, my lurcher and our walks and access to the lovely places around the village and I'm as rich as Croesus and as happy as Larry, give me He Who Knows and my girls and I'm richer and more fortunate than anyone else in the whole wide world, Cheers Lyn xxx.

:( There's a certain grim humour in that the motivation for many to scrabble and accumulate is to provide better for their children.

Have you seen how many of the children who grow up seriously-wealthy are dysfunctional? Major issues with alcohol, drugs, keeping bad company, troubled personal relationships, mental health issues, self-harm, suicides or overdoses in the worst cases.

Poor little blighters. And I don't mean that sarcastically, either.

I agree with the last comment regarding Rich Kids and their life issues. I know some people who both parents work and at Christmas get their kids age 5 I pads etc and the kids don't value anything they get, and their broken by Feb. I know some mums at the school work and feel bad as they are at work and can't pick their kids up and buy stuff as they feel so guilty. If its not moshey monsters or skylanders the kids don't want to know. Lucky me kids weren't into them fads and I refused to buy into. I haven't worked since I had the kids as I became ill (long, long story ) but I would love to work part- time but can't at the moment but know when things are better I will get a job, just not sure who would have after medical history thou:o

My youngest had a second hand bike for birthday as I jazzed it up with stuff like a seat cover to look new and eldest had a second hand DS which I got for £30. I put off getting one for a while but even now its looked after and not played to much or taken out the house.

I'm looking forward to camping:jmy friend and I did our list what we need this weekend. I'm bringing with me my cool box that plugs in as we have the luxury of electric hook up!!! feel dead posh. The kids are so excited as there is a pool at the camp site. I will be par cooking some corn on the cob to chuck on the bar be que as the kids love it. I have picked up a few ( ok ten bags to be honest )bags of quorn sausage's as they were reduced and tend to jump up in price in the new year and in summer. I will be bringing a few bags as were veggies and although the kids eat fish it bugs me that kids meals are mostly limited to deep fried fishfingers or veggie fingers. So I normally get an adult meal and split it. I will be doing our camping fav of pasta and pesto! and will be watching the pennies and were on a tight budget:( I will be bringin squash and getting stuff before we go as hubby is dropping down and picking us up as he has to work. No holiday pay because he is self employed :(.

I do feel sorry for him as he will miss the kids and a break but if we didn't go the kids I know for sure would be the only ones not to have a holiday in their class. We loved camping and my kids don't care that they don't go on holiday by plane! they are so excited that its near the seaside and there is a pool.
Oh and fish and chips sitting by the sea is the best in our books and is one treat we will having. My friend and her family are skint like us so hopefully there wont be the pressure of telling them we can't afford to eat out etc and my bag that has snack and drinks with me all the time! I know some people think I'm tight but its just that we are cutting our cloth accordingly. I don't have credit cards ( hubby does as we needed a grand to pay for our car only lovely0% atm ) and the only debt I have was my student loan and mortgage.
I'm off to wash our sleeping bags! I'm so excited. Have I told I'm going on holiday?;)

Hey Daft mummy are you going on holiday? :rotfl: sounds like theres a lot of love in your house.

When Dgs goes to one of his playgroups he always lies in a sort of baby cushion shaped much like a cat bed and he thinks its fab for relaxing in. So grandma thought ..hmmm left over piece of duvet rolled up and tacked, make a tubular cover and a padded base and Bobs your auntie :D 3 hours of tugging and sore fingers and some rather choice language we had it! really it does look like a cat bed but add the wording baby cocoon or suchlike and you treble the price. I made a chunky cushion to go with it.Went to pick up DGS from playgroup - he couldnt contain himself, he had to hug it whilst in his car seat and when he was picked out of the car he already had the bed thing in his hands. He now sets it against the couch with the cushion at the back and reclines in it whilst waiting for bedtime. Now would he rather have had some plug in machine, the latest fad character toy or his cat bed? I think we can guess.

ginnyknit its funny how they love the little things, We did stone painting! and they loved it. My kids love going to charity shops and looking for toys ! they find such good stuff I seem to miss. It might be different when they are older but they are so used getting stuff from them they don't care. And they think the poundshop is brill as its their toyshop! that's their treatshop!
When I go back to work will I get them Ipods/pads? nope its got to be powered by imagination. I would still grow my own and shop at carboots and charity shops, I would never be like one of the mums who on Christmas day posted the piles of presents her kids got unopened and opened on facebook! we were to busy playing with the fake poo one of the kids got in a joke kit!
we don't half laugh in this housex

The same goes for parents who struggle to give their kids the "best" or at least better than they had and over-indulge them terribly even if they're not remotely wealthy. Hey you! The one who wants to be their kid's "best friend", that's who I'm talking about. The sense of entitlement of some of my nieces' and nephews' friends is as startling as it is heart-breaking. It makes me wonder if any of them will make anything of their lives by their own efforts. The way some of them have been brought up suggests it will always be someone elses's fault, though.
