I really think you are taking too much
Thank you, I knew I was over-doing it, it's nice to have an outside perspective.
I have a tendency to over-prepare 'just in case', and yet I know there is a supermarket not far from the site!
I guess I am thinking what if the SHTF whilst we are away, no power to the site pitch, food reserves, etc... Doh! Now I know why I love this thread....
Much appreciated

Hello Spanishliuk
Thank you. I am going to use RAS's suggestions to slim things down a bit for our car journey, have visions of the ferry tilting to one side with the weight of it all... :rotfl:

I want one of those and I want it now!
Even better  - if there is anyone you don't like - you could leave the trap door open, put the rug over the top and sort of entice them across the gap
Well they wouldn't go hungry !
MrsLurcherwalker, Are those tins fro m and s better quality and value than other brands ?
BBB Phew ! what a list. Looks like my kind of packing. The things that sprung to my mind were noodles as they are so easy and quick, a strainer/colander and a roll of freezer bags and ties. Also if you have one a wind break and a plastic backed picnic blanket. I'm not very good at travelling light when we go in the car lol Every space is occupied by something just in case.
Ras You are the voice of reason, but I would probably do as BBB since oh would not be keen on shopping whilst on holiday.0 -
Hello again guys.
Further to my post about using garden water butts as an emergency water supply, I have had another idea:
The side of my house is about 4ft from the brick garden wall. I am thinking of building a 6ft high platform for two water butts, so that they will be able to feed my hose for car washing. (Also if the mains water supply failed, I could connect the hose to my outside tap, and keep the downstairs loo working.)
Two 210 litre water butts will weigh nearly half a ton. Would a frame of two C16 2x4's support this load over a 4ft gap? (I plan to put in cross pieces under the butts.)0 -
SIEGEMODE they're little round tins and just enough for 2 people for one meal. I like the ham because it's proper meat, I don't like the stuff that is pumped full of water and flabby, I don't like the texture. These cube up nicely for going in things like savoury rice and pies. In a SHTF situation they would feed the two of us without having to worry about having to keep leftovers if it was warm and there was no power. I like the product and at the moment it's a good price. Cheers Lyn xxx.0

I hope you don't mind me adding BBB that I would shop before I went camping and take it with me too if I had car space as A : I wouldn't want to shop for food unless really had to,only for things like milk and B : shops on or near campsites are usually quite expensive,I've been caught out like that myself in the past. I am a real tightwad though0

I'd build a ladder frame of the joists (noggins at 16inch centres) and skin with 18mm WBP ply.
How were you thinking of attaching your 2x4s to the wall at either side? I'd fit ledger plates and use joist hangers - probably overkill but I'll assume you may end up storing stuff under the shelf and that you don't want a half ton of water landing on the stuff or you.
Incidentally this is a useful tool for calculating shelf sag.

Thanks Nuatha,
I hadn't thought of the ply, but I guess it would add stiffness. Would it be worth covering everything with shed felt to keep the rain off it?0 -

If you use WBP ply you won't need the shed felt (WBP is Water and Boil Proof, I've a friend whose used it for cutting boards that go into the dishwasher regularly, and have done for 15+ years).
The ply is to add stiffness and strength, it also means that the water butts weight is more evenly distributed.0 -
