If anyone is near a Boyses shop (York, Redcar, Whitby and Middlesborough as well as a couple of other places) they have that brand at a much cheaper price

my camping approach is "any fool can rough it" however, when it got to the point where I needed to buy a camper van to transport my camping equipment, I strimmed down.

plan your meals, then only take stuff for the first couple of days, and concentrate on taking high value things, (tea, coffee, sugar condiments etc), and decanting things into plastic containers for oil etc, prices are often higher in rural holiday areas but you have to (literally) weigh that against the fuel costs to transport it yourself.

so in addition to the other comments here are mine :)

Tent repair kit (liquid sealant and tape)
    Rubber mallet
    Tent pegs

    SLEEPING:
    Sleeping bags x 2
Travel pillows x2 I always take normal pilllows, but that's just me!
Roll-up bed mats x2 - do you need these ios you have the double mattress
    Double bed air mattress
    Pump!
Separate camp bed (as OH restless sleeper!)

COOKING: (all stoves with Butane cartridges)
    Folding table and 2 chairs
Camp Stove (2 rings and grill)
Camp Grill (Provide extra large gas ring or flat griddle) - do you use this?
Single ring gas stoves x2 for hiking days - you only need one of these possibly. honestly, I can't see any eventuality where you will need 5 rings, and a grill. I'd take the double grill and one single if you are convinced you need to cook when hiking.
Long matches if you have these, great, if not buy a clicky gas fire lighter thing, they don't blow out in strong winds
Small 8 piece pan set take out the smaller ones, you won't use 8 pans in any one go (I appreciate some of this may be handles)
    Gas kettle
Small travel electric kettle (pitch site has electric) does it charge you for electric use, if so ditch this, if not ditch the gas kettle, in reality you can boil water in one ofthe pans for a brew.
    Electric connector for site
    Frying pan
2 egg poacher - leave this out
Picnic hamper (contains 4 place set of plates, bowls, cups, glasses, cutlery, can/bottle opener, small salt n pepper pots, mini chopping board, butter knife in cool box) - gut this and take two sets - just seen the kit list for the rucsac, leave the whole lot at home. yes!
    Additional cool box
Also - fish slice, scissors, tongs, wooden spoon, veg knife, oven gloves I use a scarf or another peice of clothing/tea towel, cling film I use foil to seal food, it can then be re-used for lining the grill/covering food whilst it cooks, foil, bread knife, teaspoons x2, thermos flasks x2, chopping board (can you use the one from the picnic set?), washing up bowl, liquid, scourer, dishcloth, tea towels x4 (x2), travel clothes line with pegs, soap powder for clothes in plastic tub, kitchen scissors you've already got scissors, bin bags, 1 and some carriers from your shopping, you don't want rubbish hanging around for long enough to fill a bin bag, but one can be useful kitchen roll x6 - do you actually use that much x2 would be more than ample.

    TOILETRIES:
    Bath towels x2
Toilet rolls x12 (unless you have major bowel problems 2 should be enough and 4 ample)
    Medium towels x2
Small towels x2 - leave these behind
    Large beach towel x1
    Toiletry bag x2
    Shaving foam
    Dis. shavers
    Electric shaver and plug
    Flannels x2
    Soap

    Insect repellent
    Meds

    Walking boots x2 pairs
    Walking poles x2
    Blister plasters
OS map (usually hire from library for free)

Have a sat nav to get to places quickly.

    FOOD:
Tinned toms x4, beans x6, ham x4, spam x2, stew x4, full monty breakfast x4, beans n meatballs x2, pots x6 - TOO much. Take enough for two days and shop when you arrive - they do have supermarkets on IOW it is not Outer Mongolia.
    soup x4, peas x2
W*yfarer pouches: beans & sausages x2, beans and meatballs x2, chocolate pudding x2, toffee pudding x2
Cereals: oats, weet*b*x - take one of these and buy the other
UHT milk x6 cartons - why - buy milk there
    Eggs 1/2 doz - ditto
Alcohol usually 6 tins beer, wine x2 - ditto
    Squash x1 bottle
    Pasta x1 bag - ditto

Undercrackers x7 x 4 is adequate if you wash each night, noooo I'd want a frsh pair each day :)
    Bras x3 (just me!) 2
Socks x 4 (plus spare hiking ones in rucksacks)
Fleece x2 - 1 if you are also taking a jumper
    Anoraks x2
    Fit flops
    Sandals either/or I'd have thought

    :AA/give up smoking (done) :)
  • CRAIGY well done on the veg in the grden it sounds like paradise!!! On the ladies underwear thingy, I've always found that British Home Stores make ladies pants of lasting quality (though not of great beauty) at very reasonable prices like £5 for 3 pairs occasionally. Might be worth a look, practical not pretty would be my description, but they keep the nether regions nice and warm when it's cold, Hope that helps, Cheers Lyn xxx.

Docky sends Greetings to The Prince of Belfast!!!!!!!

I SO want one of those pantries, too, or even one of each! We are just starting to think of a creative way of doing a loft conversion, involving not using the landing or bedroom for staircase, and I think I'm to going think more about an underground pantry as well. When we're thinking about stuff like this, we both work in pictures; been together so long that when either of us starts thinking aloud, the other gets pencil and paper ready! :rotfl:

I have a WHOLE child-free day tomorrow, DH at work, adult DS on holiday, so will be mostly doing some major preps combined with major tidying, so I can [STRIKE]hide stuff from DH[/STRIKE] find stuff when I need it! :D

If anyone needs to stock up on cat food the A*di tins are down to 42p. My fussy two really like them, in fact, Jeeves has been particularly lively tonight after his supper. I think he may be using the small pile of logs still by the woodburner in the sitting room as his "larder" at the moment, hope not too many voles and moles have moved in!

How much credence should we put in this? Given how much more we rely on electrickery now than the 70s, t'internet, mobiles, freezers, etc., what do you do if we end up back in the 70s with regular power cuts?

  • CHEAPY we'd just do things by hand again!!!and use land line telephones or send letters. I've felt for some time now that all the electrical gadgets that you can buy are perhaps not a good step forward, do we really need electric carving knives, toenail cutters, lemon squeezers etc? We have an old fashioned pretty low tech home, so we've limited our dependency on the power supply to some extent. Having said that if we didn't have the major things like the washing machine, vacuum cleaner and freezer our lives would be much less comfortable, but I can sweep floors because we've got rid of the fitted carpets and have lino, I know how to bottle and preserve food so the freezer is a convenience but not a necessity and it would mean shopping more frequently or using more tins, again achieveable. The biggest loss would be the washing machine which makes a hard task easy, firstly we would have to wear our clothes for a little longer before washing them but again we could hand wash and I can remember my Mum having a mangle in the yard so going back to that would mean some of the hard work had mechanical help. We would manage just fine and learn how to do things the old fashioned way again, Cheers Lyn xxx.

I'd really miss the interweb but we still have books, and we can still read!!!
